Beach party
PANAMA CITY BEACHIf pure joy could be visualized, it likely would resemble the dance floor at Schooners on Tuesday morning.Dozens of students with mental and physical disabilities shook, rattled and rolled to the rhythm at the annual Margaret K. Lewis beach party. While they might have problems in other areas of life, Margaret K. Lewis students lack the inhibitions and insecurities of most other teenagers and love to boogie, said Principal Barbara Hardy."They just really love the music," she added. The Bay County Sheriff's Office and Schooners have been sponsoring the beach party for decades."On a daily basis we see a lot of things that are depressing," said Sgt. Marc Tochterman, adding the beach party is the exact opposite. Deputies guided several school buses through red lights and intersections from Margaret K. Lewis in Panama City to Schooners on Gulf Drive near Panama City Beach."We could hear them hooping and hollering," Tochterman said. "Everybody here today is here for them."Amy Reid, 17, was hoping to dance and sing along with classics such as "Bad" by Michael Jackson.Reid also planned to "dance with my best friend."Thomas Brown's taste in country music, specifically Garth Brooks, ran contrary to the pop sensibilities of the DJ. Brown said he planned to console himself by eating hot dogs. Brown, 19, a senior, also talked about getting a job after high school.Margaret K. Lewis' prom will be held later this month. The students will dress up and party down just like their brothers and sisters at other area high schools."They are so much like typical teenagers," said teacher Rita Carlson. "They just enjoy music."The youngsters are atypical in a number of other ways, she added. When they have a bad day and fight with a teacher, for example, it is short-lived. The next day, the student will run up and hug the teacher as if nothing happened, Carlson said. That's different from the other classrooms Carlson has taught, where students could hold grudges for days or weeks."They live for today," Carlson said. "They live for now."
