Meyer calls victim's father
University of Florida football coach Urban Meyer called Jim Slonina on Monday night to talk about the recent incidents involving a gas card that belonged to Slonina's daughter, Ashley, a Florida student who died in an Oct. 12 motorcycle accident."He was truly sad that it had occurred and he talked to us from parent to parent," Slonina said. "I think a lot of coach Meyer. I honestly believe, I knew in my heart that he would not stand for this type of behavior. When he talked to me, it was person to person. From a parent to a parent."Former Florida Gator junior safety Jamar Hornsby is accused of using Ashley Slonina's BP gas card, which belonged to her father's company, Panhandle Engineering in Lynn Haven, after the girl's death. Hornsby turned himself in at 5:30 a.m. May 9, responding to a warrant on charges of fraudulent use of a credit card and larceny of a credit card. He was released on his own recognizance early that afternoon.Meyer dismissed Hornsby from the Gators later that day.Jim Slonina said he and wife, Rosemary, are supporting the judicial process in this case."I would anticipate that we will be pursuing civil litigation regardless of the criminal activity," Slonina said. "We're not allowing ourselves to get wound up."According to Alachua County court documents, Hornsby started using the card Oct. 13, the day after Ashley died. He used it 70 times in Alachua County and Jacksonville, his hometown, accumulating $2,856.43 in charges, an average of just more than $40 per charge.Steve Maynard of the Alachua County Sheriff's Office said Hornsby is suspected of obtaining the card while helping the Slonina family move Ashley's possessions from her Gainesville home.A private investigator hired by Slonina filmed Hornsby using the card at a Kangaroo gas station in Gainesville on April 3, according to court documents. Those documents showed that most of the Jacksonville charges were made on weekends and during Florida's Spring Break. They were made "at the store just down the road from the defendant's home address," the documents stated.Slonina said he has seen still-frame photographs taken from the video of Hornsby using the card.An arraignment date for Hornsby has not been set, State Attorney's Office spokesman Spencer Mann said. The State Attorney's Office has not received the paperwork from the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, Mann said. He expects the paperwork to arrive either today or early next week and then the case will be assigned to a prosecutor and reviewed by the state attorney."The state attorney reviews every athlete incident that occurs because there's more scrutiny and public records requests than any other incident," Mann said. After noticing the charges about three months ago, Slonina went to Lynn Haven police which contacted the Alachua County Sheriff's Office. Slonina hired a private investigator about that time and said it took "quite a while to undertake surveillance on multiple times."Maynard said Hornsby was identified from the tapes provided by the private investigator and there is no evidence anybody other than Hornsby used the card."Obviously, we're very sad and mad about someone that would be so morally bankrupt, just somebody that has such low character that would do this," Slonina said. "What we will do is support the district attorney in their efforts."

Wewa celebrates victory
WEWAHITCHKAThe only problem Wewahitchka's softball team appeared to have this year was when Coy Adkins' microphone went out during Friday's rally celebrating the Lady Gators' second-straight Class 2A state title. But just as the Lady Gators' struggles this season were short-lived, the microphone quickly turned back on and the rally continued.More than 300 people gathered in front of Vision Bank in downtown Wewahitchka as the Lady Gators arrived home from Plant City a little before 6 p.m. riding atop two fire trucks. Adkins, who won the title in his first year as head coach, spoke from a flat-bed truck as the team stood nearby, wearing their gold medals around their necks.#149 Click here for video from Wewa's homecoming.#149 Click here to see the Wewa championship photo gallery."It was not even close to the number of fans we had compared to the other teams in our class," Adkins said.About 250 Wewa faithful made the six-hour trip to see the team's victory in Plant City, Adkins said. He estimated Gator fans outnumbered their opponents 10 to 1."You can't express your feelings about it," Wewa Mayor Ray Dickens said. "It's just awesome."Wewa defeated Glades Day 3-0 in Wednesday's Class 2A semifinal and Jacksonville Providence 4-1 in Thursday's championship. For Wewa's seniors, Friday capped a fourth-straight final four appearance and a second state title."It didn't feel like we won it because it was expected," senior third baseman Summer Grice said. "But now it's sinking in because we're here."The Lady Gators dedicated this season to assistant coach Daniel Miller, who suffered an incapacitating stroke the week before Christmas. The underdogAbout 24 hours after the last strike by junior pitcher Samantha Rich, the achievement of winning back-to-back titles started to sink in. Last year, Wewa was the underdog throughout the state playoffs after four years of losing in the state semifinals.Wewa was known as the small-town public school that couldn't beat the big-city private schools. Last year's win erased those doubts and this year's title just secured the notion that Wewa wasn't a one-time wonder, according to the team."This year we got more accomplished," said Rich, who had 31 strikeouts in the two state games. "We accomplished a great feat. Once is great. Twice is something else."And for the second straight year, a large crowd greeted the Lady Gators."It's nice that the town comes together for softball," senior center fielder Ashley Gates said. From the back of the crowd, assistant coach Charles Fortner watched Adkins address the crowd. His smile represented 14 years of hard work with Wewa softball. Adkins admitted he's reaping the benefits of what Fortner began developing when Wewa's fastpitch program began in 1994.In the last four years, the Lady Gators have a 103-16 record and two state titles. They've been to the regional playoffs each of the last 15 years and to the final four in six of the last eight."They keep winning. We can't help it," Fortner said. "We started a machine here."Looking out at the crowd, adorned in red and white, Adkins grew sentimental."How blessed we are to be in this community," he said. "It really make you appreciate the high school I work in and the community that's behind it."I slept good last night, I'll tell you that."Adkins will allow his returning players the weekend to savor the win. Next week, the Lady Gators begin their quest toward a three-peat."Got to start thinking about it Monday," Adkins said. "We got a shot."
