Vettetastic Preview Party
Six of the 12 miniature 1957 Corvette Coupes on display Thursday night at a party at the Sloan Convention Center will be up for auction Saturday. More than 160 people took a look at the Fiberglas cars painted with colorful murals, maps of the areas and adorned with glass beads as part of the Vettetastic Preview Party. The party featured a ’50s theme to play up the model year of the featured Corvettes and the centerpiece of the party was a teal convertible on loan from a California couple who also had loaned the car to the National Corvette Museum.Christine Huntington and her husband, John, sported the best ’50s outfits they could remember from their high school days - she in her pedal pushers and he in his tight jeans and thin tight white T-shirt.“We wanted to come out and have a good time and support the Red Cross,” she said.Indeed, they were among the first to hit the dance floor when Skip Bond and the Fugitives began playing.Don Durflinger and his wife, Janice, were sitting in the corner next to the root beer float stand. Durflinger owns the Culver’s Restaurant franchise in Bowling Green that provided the floats for the event. Culver’s corporate office sponsored the car and participates in many Red Cross fundraisers nationally, he said.Their Corvette, a banana split of sorts, was mounted on a pedestal nearby.“We had a lot of fun painting it,” Durflinger said. “And there has been a lot of interest in the car that has been parked at the business.”His is one of the six that will be auctioned.“I just hope I don’t have to pay a lot for it if I buy it back,” he joked.Friends Thayla Hatley of Franklin and Norita Crowe of Bowling Green decided to come out to the event together.“She saw it in the paper and I thought we needed to come out,” Hatley said. “I graduated in ’59, so I was growing up smack in the middle of the 50s.”Crowe said she used to work for the Red Cross in Elizabethtown, so she can appreciate what they have to do.“I used to escort people after they were giving blood to the (canteen),” she said. “It was always the big guys we had the most trouble with.”She recalled helping a 6-foot-5 fellow sink to the floor as he was drinking his orange juice.Across the table, two other women tapped their fingers to the music.Bobbi Nimmo and Lynette Cauley, both of Bowling Green, also saw the item in the paper and decided to show up.“We are here for the music and we know the guy who is going to be Elvis. He comes into Ryans where we work,” Nimmo said.Later in the evening Stan Snodgrass took to the stage as Elvis. The event was part of a nearly yearlong fundraising project of the American Red Cross. Executive director Jennifer Capps said the chapter has had to step up its fundraising efforts since losing its status as an umbrella agency and funding of the United Way of Southern Kentucky. The auction at 2 p.m. Saturday during the National Corvette Homecoming at the Convention Center will be a highlight for the fundraising efforts. Numerous gift baskets and other items for auction will be offered Saturday.Twelve groups or businesses paid $2,995 dollars for the Corvettes; the six that will keep the cars paid an additional $3,000.Thursday night’s party was geared to raise excitement for the auction and raise a little money as well. The University Plaza Hotel provided the ’50s diner food for the event and Party 1 Superstore provided all the decor, Capps said.Because of the sponsorships, the organization will be able to make some money on the event, she said.“And the awareness that we created for the Red Cross and Vettetastic is priceless,” Capps said. “I think we have set a good precedent for the future.”The organization also hopes to make money with a coffee table book it is selling. Reservations are being taken for the book, which features the miniature Corvettes, their construction and the events surrounding them. The books, expected to be 50 to 100 pages, will be available for presale for $25 if they are picked up from the Red Cross office, 430 Center St., and $30 with shipping. They also will be available on Amazon.com.The organization has the rights to auction off certain model car replicas every other year through 2016.The cars that will be auctioned and their sponsors include: “Building Dreams Thru the Years ... One Job at a Time,” sponsored by the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Plant, “Wacky Taxi,” sponsored by Bowling Green Rubber and Gasket Company, “Real Vettes are Red - The Daily News is Read,” sponsored by the Daily News, “Corvette Headquarters,” sponsored by Holley Automotive, Culver’s Splitmobile, sponsored by Culver’s Restaurant and “Unbridled Spirit,” sponsored by Integra Bank. The Bowling Green Area Convention and Visitors Bureau purchased three cars that will be on permanent display, Houchens Industries-Crossroads IGA purchased the vehicle designed by Drakes Creek Middle School to allow the school to have a permanent display, and Hammerhead Design, sponsored and designed a car it purchased for permanent display. The company is from Memphis, Tenn.— For more information about the Red Cross and its programs, call 781-7377.
