Higher, Faster, Stronger: 1950s Experimental Aircraft
: Photo: U.S. Air ForceThe 1950s was the decade of the test pilot and the experimental aircraft, as aviation technology turned to the jet engine and pushed its limits in both speed and endurance. With the world divided in Cold War, the stakes were high. Jet aircraft dominated both U.S. and Soviet arsenals and the data returned by subsonic and supersonic test flights had implications for the coming space race as well. A number of aviation companies turned out experimental aircraft, primarily for the armed forces. The pilots who flew them measured success in ways their predecessors could only dream of. They set records for speed and altitude that were unimaginable only a few years earlier, piloting aircraft that were volatile, unpredictable and often flat-out dangerous. When the time came to select astronauts for the nascent U.S. space program, it's not surprising that NASA recruiters turned to their ranks seeking the guys with the right stuff. Hiller X-18The X-18 was an experimental cargo-transport aircraft designed to be the first testbed for tilt-wing and STOVL (short takeoff and vertical landing) technology. It was, however, seriously underpowered for its purpose and could not even exceed Mach 1 in level flight.: Photo: U.S. ArmyThe Goodyear Inflatoplane was an experimental aircraft made by the Goodyear Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. The X-15 set numerous speed and altitude records in the early 1960s, reaching the edge of space and bringing back valuable data that was used in the designs of aircraft and spacecraft. The altitudes reached by the X-15 remained unsurpassed by any piloted aircraft (except the space shuttle) until the third space flight of SpaceShipOne in 2004.: Photo: U.S. Air ForceThe Lockheed X-7 (dubbed the "Flying Stove Pipe") was an unmanned testbed for ramjet engines and missile-guidance technology. The booster was then jettisoned, and the underslung ramjet took over from that point. The X-7 eventually returned to Earth, its descent slowed by parachute. A maximum speed of 2,881 mph (4,640 km/h, or Mach 4.31) was attained, setting a record for fastest air-breathing aircraft. A total of 130 X-7 flights were conducted between April 1951 and July 1960.: Photo: NASAA Convair XF-92A in flight over Edwards Air Force Base around 1953. Mobile phones: Spanish troubles drag down Vodafone
Vodafone became the latest victim of the slowdown yesterday as the mobile group warned that its annual revenues would be at the bottom end of forecasts. The revision - mainly caused by falling sales in Spain - shocked the City and sent shares down almost 14% to close at 129p, making it the biggest percentage faller in the FTSE 100. It cast a shadow over the departure of chief executive Arun Sarin, who is stepping down next week after five years at the helm. Ericsson also suffered from a Vodafone effect, with shares down 11% despite reporting better than expected quarterly earnings figures. Although Vodafone said results were in line with expectations, and reiterated guidance on operating profit and cash flow, it said full-year revenues were likely to be at the lower end of its previously stated range of £39.8bn to £40.7bn. The company said trouble at its Spanish operations had dragged European organic revenues down by 0.2% year on year in the three months to the end of June. With more than 16 million customers, Spain is one of the company's four main European markets, along with the UK, Italy and Germany. Service revenues in Spain were down 2.5% in the quarter, contrasting with 8.1% growth over the course of last year. Jonathan Groocock, an analyst at Investec, said the evidence of slowdown in Spain "shatters the widespread perception that the company is immune to an economic slowdown". "Perhaps it was always too good to be true," said Mark James at Collins Stewart. "The Spanish and UK telecoms markets, resilient to the economic slowdown to date, finally look to have cracked." Sarin said Vodafone had suffered from a "relatively severe macroeconomic environment". "We are not immune to it but we are much more resilient than most other companies. If anyone thought we were immune, that would have been a mis-thinking about how we operate." He said one problem in Spain was that migrant workers who had been working in construction were returning home. "Migrants and small-to-medium-size companies have taken a lot of share. But here comes the downturn - there's less construction work and some migrants have gone home. But it's not a business that's falling apart, it's a segment within that business." He said in the UK - where service revenues for the quarter were up 2.1% thanks to data and messaging, but revenues from phone calls fell by 4.4% - the main difficulty was competition from other mobile networks. Sarin said earnings would be protected by the company's cost-reduction plans and the strength of the euro against the pound could, on current trends, benefit the company by as much as £750m over the six months to the end of September. Revenues for eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific were up 9.2% on an organic basis in the quarter. Overall Vodafone added 8.5 million subscribers in the quarter, taking the company's customer base to around 269 million. Group revenues rose 19% to £9.8bn in the quarter, with overall organic growth of 1.7%.Related StoriesBSkyB and Universal to launch digital music serviceSaharan sun could power European supergridSolar power from Saharan sun could provide Europe's electricity, says EUUS media: Wife's rant on YouTube falls foul of judgeJohn Sutherland on how Google's library project could transform research

Transfer news and speculation, 23 July
West Ham will today complete their first major signing of the summer with the £5m acquisition of Swiss international Valon Behrami. The 23-year-old, who can play at right-back or the right of midfield, will sign from Lazio. Talks have been ongoing for some time for Behrami, who started all three of Switzerland's matches at Euro 2008. West Ham have beaten off interest from other clubs in England, and in Germany, to sign Behrami. The Hammers maintain the signing does not mean they will sell captain Lucas Neill, although they are expecting to receive bids for the Australia international. Neither are they prepared to offload George McCartney – even if Sunderland increase the offer of £4.5m that was recently turned down. Both players have said they want to stay at Upton Park. They will not, however, be joined by Eidur Gudjohnsen. West Ham have rejected claims that they offered £5m for the Icelandic striker – who they have tried to sign in the past – and insist they have no interest in buying him from Barcelona. The club are in the market for a new goalkeeper having allowed Richard Wright to rejoin Ipswich Town, while Robert Green's future is in doubt with the player keen on a move away from West Ham. Fulham have shown a tentative interest.
