Alabama woman takes fight for equal pay to convention
Lily Ledbetter tells delegates Obama would fix the problem. DENVER -- Lilly Ledbetter of Jacksonville took her fight for equal pay for equal work before the Democratic National Convention Tuesday night. "Equal pay for equal work is a fundamental American principal. We need leaders in this country who will fight for it," Ledbetter said as delegates especially female delegates, jumped to their feet in applause. Ledbetter worked as a supervisor at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant in Gadsden for 19 years, then discovered she had been receiving smaller pay raises than her male co-workers even though they were doing the same job. Ledbetter sued and initially was awarded $3 million, but that judgment was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision. The court ruled that Ledbetter was required to file her suit within six months of her first raise, a standard she failed to meet since she didn't discover the discrepancy for 19 years. "Those differences affected my family's quality of life then, and they affect my retirement now," Ledbetter said. The U.S. House passed a law, named for Ledbetter, to address the problems cited by the court's decision, but the Senate has not passed the act. Ledbetter said she will never receive the pay for which she worked, but she said that, if the nation will elect Sen. Barack Obama, he will work to "fix this terrible ruling."

Woman who fought for fair pay speaks at convention tonight
Lilly Ledbetter of Jacksonville sued over unequal pay at a Gadsden plant DENVER -- The first Alabamian to address the Democratic National Convention takes the stage tonight. Lilly Ledbetter of Jacksonville, who drew the spotlight during her struggles to gain equal pay for equal work at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant in Gadsden, is expected to speak to delegates shortly before the keynote address to be given by former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner. Tonight's convention program is built around the theme "Renewing America's Promise," and Ledbetter is expected to talk about her efforts for equal pay at the Gadsden plant. One of the few women supervisors at the plant, Ledbetter was consistently awarded lower pay raises than her male counterparts. She eventually sued and was awarded $3.3 million, but that award was reversed by an appeals court. The U.S. Supreme Court eventually ruled Ledbetter had filed her suit too late, even though she had not discovered the pay inequity until years of work. The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, but the Senate so far has not gone along with it.

Supreme Court Litigant to Address Democratic National Convention
One sign that the Democrats will raise the Supreme Court as a campaign issue will come Tuesday night when Lilly Ledbetter addresses the Democratic national convention in Denver. A former Goodyear tire worker, Ledbetter became a symbol of the effects of the Court's conservative turn after she lost a case based on her claim of unequal pay.

SPEAKING OF . . . After publishing findings that show Americans are earning less than their parents, the Beacon Journal invited readers to participate in focus groups. Here's some of what they said: Nora Szlag, 64, of Stow: ''The trouble is a lot of young people are not educated enough about finances to invest properly in 401(k)s. When I first started, it was all managed for me. Then at some point in time, that changed and they gave you all these things to pick from. But you had to figure it out.'' Jimmy Taylor, 59, of Cuyahoga Falls: ''I would rather have a guaranteed pension that someone else took care of, that I knew I was going to get. In the past, that's the way it was. You never questioned your pension. I never questioned whether Goodrich or Goodyear or Ford was willing to pay me. Now, I do.'' Patricia Lindley, of Fairlawn: ''I looked forward to not working, but now I don't see that ever happening.'' Tom Fuller, 62, of Akron: ''You know, the people who I see retiring well are people in public-sector jobs. I mean, that seems to be the last place that has quality retirement programs. And the salaries at those public jobs have increased. They're decent salaries as well. . . . And no risk. There's tremendous security in civil service.'' Lyn Gwinn, 59, of Akron: ''Many boomers have a fear that in the future, our Social Security may be reduced and/or eliminated based upon balances in our 401(k) plans. This is no different than reducing what subsidy folks currently receive from Medicare for nursing home stays. For those who saved and were prudent, they receive substantially less government subsidy than those who spent all the money they had and never saved for retirement.'' Mario Nemr, 30, of Akron: ''My dad kind of retired. I don't think my mom knows how to retire. The kind of retirement where you play golf in the morning isn't really part of their life. I think it's like, 'We're done with this, so let's do something else.' ''
