NASA Does a U-Turn, Opens To Private Industry
mattnyc99 writes "Popular Mechanics is reporting that NASA — faced with the looming retirement of the space shuttle, and planning for longer missions like the one to Mars we've been discussing — is looking to free up its budget and depend a lot more on private space startups to carry key payloads into orbit in the next few years. For an agency so steeped in bureaucracy, it seems like everyone from NASA chief Mike Griffin to contracted officials to the key players in this in-depth podcast roundtable is finally acknowledging that commercial rocketeering (space tourists aside) is a more efficient a means of getting back into space for NASA. Quoting: 'Because of a new focus for NASA's strategic investments — not to mention incentives like the Ansari X Prize, which spurred the space-tourism business, and the Google Lunar X Prize, which could do the same for payloads — private-sector spaceships could be ready for government service soon, says Sam Scimemi, who heads NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program. "The industry has grown up," he tells PM. "It used to be that only NASA or the Air Force could do such things."'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Google blurs the privacy issue
Google is hoping to avoid a fight with European privacy campaigners as it prepares to launch its controversial Street View service this side of the Atlantic later in the year, by introducing new technology that blurs the faces of people its cameras inadvertently snap while scanning the streets. Street View, launched in the US last May, adds street-level pictures to the search engine's existing Google Maps' information. A fleet of vans fitted with cameras have been trawling the streets of more than 20 American cities, photographing the pavements to provide a complete visual map of the area. But the cameras also take pictures of anyone who happens to be walking by at the time. While this has caused controversy among privacy campaigners in the US, it could result in serious legal problems in countries such as France with strict privacy laws. Last night, Google relaunched its Street View of Manhattan with pedestrians' faces blurred. The in-house technology errs on the side of caution so it also tends to pixellate faces in adverts. It will also remove Street View images if anyone objects . Cars and vans bearing the Google Street View logo have been spotted in Paris and the company is understood to be planning to add a number of other European cities, including London, to the service this year. A spokesperson for the company refused to give a date for the European launch but said: "We will not launch in Europe until we are comfortable Street View complies with local law. "We will use technology, like face-blurring, and operational controls, such as image-removal tools, so Street View remains useful and in keeping with local norms wherever it is available."

BT's got talent lined up for its Podshows
A spiritualist who "feels vibrations in his aura" when making contact, a healer who claims to cure hangovers through touch and self-styled sex therapist Dr Cockney are among the wannabe TV celebrities who have won the backing of BT. The telecoms company will today announce the full consumer launch of BT Podshow, an online TV portal which allows people to create their own television and radio serials and earn a living by linking their shows with advertisers. The service is a joint venture with US-based Podshow, in which the backers of Google and YouTube have invested, and which has been running for several months. It has over 1m hours of content. The two companies signed their original deal in September 2006 and, since then, Podshow has been looking for British talent and helping with production costs. Several Podshows, such as Dr Cockney's take on sexual matters, are doing well on iTunes. BT Podshow is also in talks with This Morning's Dr Chris Steele, and working with OK magazine on a weekly programme. Traditional television channels have also been in touch about licensing Podshow content for use on digital TV. Creators and viewers of Podshows have to register and shows are regularly updated. BT Podshow hopes this will make the site attractive to advertisers who have so far avoided online video. "We are what we call a brand-safe network," said BT Podshow president Adam Curry. "There is an expectation about what is going to be delivered, an advertiser won't just find themselves next to a video of someone shooting a firecracker out of his bum."
