2008 WSOP Day 39: Main Event tops 2007
Day 1d turned out to be the biggest Day 1 of the Main Event this year, drawing in 2,461 players. That brings the total number of players in the 2008 Main Event to 6,844. While that still doesn't meet the record-breaking field of 2006, it's up nearly 500 players from 6,358 in 2007. The prize pool has also increased accordingly. Those players who made it through their Day 1s are looking at a $64,333,600 prize pool, with the winner earning more than $9 million this year. There were 1,652 players who survived Day 1d on Sunday, and among them were former world champions Phil Hellmuth Carlos Mortensen, Johnny Chan and the current reigning champ Jerry Yang. Unfortunately former Main Event winners Chris "Jesus" Ferguson and Noel Furlong didn't have that same success in Day 1d and are out. There were plenty of other familiar pros who survived the day, including David Oppenheim, Gus Hansen, Cliff Josephy, Antonio Esfandiari, Brandon Cantu, Nam Le, Steve Billirakis, Jean-Robert Bellande, Jennifer Harman, Phil Gordon, Hevad Khan, Allen Cunningham, Men Nguyen, Scott Clements, Van Nguyen, Shannon Elizabeth, Nick Binger, Eric Mizrachi and Johan Storakers. There were plenty of celebrities who took to the felt on Sunday as well. Actress turned poker pro Jennifer Tilly was there, but only made it through about five hours of play. UFC fighters Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffin were also on hand, and Chuck Liddell even ended up playing at an ESPN feature table before busting out early in the day. Griffin, freshly bruised from his title-fight win the night before, survived a few hours of play but also busted during Day 1d. Griffin was KOd after taking a big hit from Johnny Chan who took some chips off the UFC champion with a pair of kings. Then on a hand soon after, Griffin moved all-in on a flop of #Qj#Jh#3c and got a call from Vincent Curry. Griffin showed #Ks#9d to Curry's #Qd#8s. The turn and river blanked and Griffin was out. There are plenty of other casualties from Day 1d as well. Take a look and see if your favorite player is in or out in the 2008 WSOP Live Tournaments section. The Main Event won't be back in play today. The players from Day 1a and Day 1b will return to play Day 2a on Tuesday. While the Main Event is taking a break today, the final event of the 2008 WSOP will get underway. Event 55, the $500 Casino Employees No-Limit Hold'em event will get underway at noon. Last year the Casino Employee event was the second event of the WSOP. It drew in more than $1,000 entrants with Frederick Narciso taking the top spot for a $104,701 win. Stay tuned to the Event 55 live updates to see how the action plays out this year. 2008 WSOP Day 38: Main Event final Day 1 begins
That bring the Main Event up to 4,383 players so far, but there is still one more Day 1 left to play before a final total can be tallied for the 2008 WSOP Main Event. Day 1d got underway at noon today, and its official count won't be released until registration closes after two levels of play. While they're getting going, let's take a look at how Day 1c finished off. A few former world champions chose Day 1c to get their start in the Main Event. Brad Daugherty, Jim Bechtel, Huck Seed, Chris Moneymaker and Joe Hachem were all in the mix. Unfortunately for Seed, he only lasted about 17 minutes into the day. He became the fasted bustout of the former world championship so far. Bechtel also busted on Day 1c. The world champions who have survived their Day 1s are: Daugherty, Moneymaker, Hachem, Scotty Nguyen and Robert Varkonyi. Other players among the 1,026 who survived Day 1c include David Singer, Brad Booth, Evelyn Ng, Nenad Medic, Brian Townsend, Liz Lieu, Rolf Slotboom, Mike Matusow, Minh Nguyen, Bertrand Grospellier, Bill Chen, Matt Graham, Mike Binger, Eric Lynch, Clonie Gowen, Lacey Jones, Mel Judah and more. The chip leader coming out of Day 1c is Henning Granstad from Oslo, Norway. He finished the day with $249,950 in chips. His total tops the chip leaders from Day 1a and Day 1b, making Granstad the current overall chip leader as well. Of course, that could change today as the final Day 1 takes place. The numbers aren't out yet, but there have been plenty of stars who waited until the last day of Day 1s to take on the Main Event. Chip and Karino Jett are there today along with Victor Ramdin, Antonio Esfandiari, Steve Billirakis, Shane Schleger, Allen Cunningham, Gus Hansen, Steve Dannenman, Ryan Daut, Mark Newhouse, Eskimo Clark, Hevad Khan, Phil Ivey, Scott Clements, Johnny Chan, Jean-Robert Bellande, Phil Hellmuth, Men "The Master" Nguyen, Carlos Mortensen, Barbara Enright, Chris Ferguson and many more. All those players are still in it, but there are more than a few well-known pros who've also showed up today and headed home again already. Andy Bloch, Annie Duke, Raymond Davis, David Williams, Joe Pelton and Tim Vance. Jose Conseco, Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffen were also in the house for some poker but busted out. For all the latest action, hit up the Main Event live updates where we'll make sure you see how your favorite players are doing throughout the day.Visit PokerListings.com
