"We are excited that there may be people in the city of Springfield who are interested in coming down," said the Rev. James B. Walker, pastor of the Phillips Metropolitan Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Hartford. "This conference has been going on for 140 years, and this is the first time we've been to Massachusetts." The church has invited the public to free events. The first is a reception at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Sheraton Springfield Monarch Place on Main Street followed by a 7 p.m. gospel concert and ecumenical crusade also at the Sheraton. The church will host an ecumenical Communion service 7 p.m. Monday, also at the Sheraton. The church will use the event to reach out to other Christian churches, Walker said. "It's become apparent that when it comes to living faithfully, you can't do it alone or in isolation," Walker said. "There are so many things we as denominations allow to cause us to be separate." The New York-Washington Regional Annual Conference will draw church members, pastors and delegates from South Carolina to Buffalo, N.Y., to the Sheraton and the Springfield Marriott Hotel. The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church has 700,000 members in the United States, Haiti, Jamaica and in Africa, he said. Former slaves founded the denomination in Jackson, Tenn., in 1870, Walker said by phone Friday. "We have a Southern base," he said. "But we've built upon that base." The C.M.E.'s only Massachusetts church is in Springfield, St. Mark C.M.E. Church on Dresden Street led by the Rev. Maxine Moore. Pastors and church leaders from around the region will report back during the convention on a year's worth of activities in their churches. The denomination will ordain pastors on Thursday.
