Report: VW picks Tennessee over Alabama
Huntsville loses out to Chattanooga in contest for automaker's coveted assembly plant, report from Germany says.Volkswagen will build its new U.S. plant in Chattanooga, defying widespread speculation that the project would land in Alabama, a media report says. Bloomberg News, citing sources in Germany within the company, reported the decision this morning. State officials said this morning they had not been notified by the company, which is expected to make an official announcement today.The automaker is expected to invest around $1 billion and create 2,000 jobs when its assembly plant is up and running in a couple of years in Chattanooga's Enterprise South Industrial Park. A site recently annexed by Huntsville in Limestone County was competing against Chattanooga and a site in Michigan for the plant. Germany media reports have said Volkswagen wants to begin making vehicles at the plant in 2010, ramping up to 300,000 vehicles per year by 2018. The German automotive press has said the plant would produce the Jetta sedan and an all new sedan about the size of the Passat. Volkswagen subsidiary Audi may also produce its planned Q5 sport utility vehicle at the plant, reports have said. Though Volkswagen said in April it was considering sites in Alabama, Tennessee and Michigan for the plant, most speculation centered on the real battle being between the Limestone County and the Chattanooga sites. Economic developers and high-level leaders, including the governors of the states, had multiple meetings with Volkswagen representatives to try to tip the scales in their favor. Volkswagen's decision would have provided a jolt to the Alabama's automotive industry. The state is already home to billion-dollar plants for Mercedes-Benz and Honda -- both of which have expanded since locating here -- and Hyundai. Toyota also manufactures engines in Huntsville and has expanded its plant there.
