Hasbro reports increase in profits in 2nd quarter
The company's stock has traded between $21.57 and $39.98 during the past 52 weeks. By MAE ANDERSON Associated Press PAWTUCKET, R.I. - Toymaker Hasbro Inc. said Monday second-quarter profit rose, helped by demand for products related to movies including "Iron Man" and "Star Wars." However, shares fell as the company said it will increase prices for the second time this year on Sept. 1 to offset the rising cost of oil and commodities. "Clearly the current economic situation in the U.S. and around the globe makes it a much more challenging environment than we would like," said Brian Goldner, president and chief executive, during a conference call. However, he added that the company has performed well in previous economic downturns and is "well positioned to have a strong 2008." The company said profit rose to $37.5 million, or 25 cents per share, from $4.8 million, or 3 cents per share, a year earlier. Excluding a one-time year-ago expense related to repurchasing some warrants, net income fell 9 percent, but results beat the 22 cents per share that analysts polled by Thomson Financial, on average, predicted. Sales jumped 13 percent to $784.3 million from $691.4 million. U.S. and Canada sales rose 11 percent and International sales rose 15 percent. Analysts expected sales of $675.4 million. Hasbro said its boys business sales rose 13 percent, boosted by sales of "Star Wars" products, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" as well as Marvel products related to "Iron Man" and "The Hulk." Most Star Wars products were tied to an animated Star Wars movie, "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," which is set to debut Aug. 15. "Transformers" products also continued to sell well, Hasbro said. The company's games division, Hasbro Games - formerly Milton Bradley - manufactures games and puzzles including Monopoly, the Game of Life, Battleship, Candy Land, and Chutes and Ladders in East Longmeadow, Mass. In January, Hasbro Games announced a plan to cut 200 jobs from its 1,350-strong work force and invest about $40 million in its East Longmeadow plant. Revenue in the girls category rose 24 percent, helped by sales of The Littlest Pet Shop Products. Tweens business sales rose 5 percent, driven by Nerf product sales, but the company said demand for its i-Dog products weakened. Preschool sales rose 11 percent, driven by Playskool sales, and games and puzzle sales rose 12 percent, on strong demand for Monopoly and other board games. David Hargreaves, chief operating officer and chief financial officer, said during the conference call that the price of oil has risen more than the company expected, leading to higher costs of resin, ocean freight charges and the cost to transport products to customers. "Cost-saving initiatives and pricing actions have thus far mitigated most increases," he said, but another price increase is necessary in September. "We've already announced it to customers," Hargreaves said. "They obviously don't like it but they recognize that their own private-label costs are going up and they've accepted it." Rising costs are an issue throughout the toy industry. Mattel Inc. raised prices in June to mitigate commodity costs and has said it might raise prices again. "Overall, this was an impressive quarter for Hasbro," Lehman Brothers analyst Felicia Hendrix wrote in a note to investors. "While movie-related properties drove upside, the company's core evergreen franchises also benefited sales," wrote Hendrix, who rates the company "Equal Weight." "On the cost side, gross margins were lower than our forecast," she added. Looking forward, the company is gearing up for two more major movie releases next year, with a new "Transformers" movie slated for June and a "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra" movie directed by "The Mummy" director Stephen Sommers due in early August. Shares fell $1.34, or 3.5 percent, to $36.65 during morning trading. The stock has traded between $21.57 and $39.98 during the past 52 weeks. Material from The Republican's archives was used in this report.
