Dallas Mavericks taking a major interest in Carlisle
By JEFF CAPLAN Dallas Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson has interviewed Rick Carlisle twice in the last two days, but he said early Saturday afternoon that the search for Avery Johnson's replacement is not complete.Carlisle, the former Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers coach and current ESPN analyst, has not been hired, although he is the only candidate at this point to garner an interview, Nelson said."We've had a few very productive meetings with Rick. We're very impressed by not only the basketball IQ, but the person," Nelson said. "We look forward to continuing the dialogue. We've gathered some information as have they" (Carlisle and his agent Warren LaGarie)."We have information, as have Rick and Warren, and we'll continue to analyze it," Nelson added. "The first set of meetings have gone very well."Nelson said other candidates could still be considered. At this point only Jeff Van Gundy is on the market and he reportedly has said he is not interested in coaching this season. The Mavs could wait to see if Phoenix Suns coach Mike D'Antoni leaves his post. Although, it appears D'Antoni is more interested in the Chicago Bulls opening."We're not disclosing or discounting anything at this point," Nelson said.Carlisle, 49, owns a 281-211 regular-season record in six seasons and is 30-32 in the playoffs. He coached the Pistons for two seasons, from 2001-03, going 100-64 in the regular season and 12-15 in the playoffs. He also was named the 2001-02 NBA Coach of the Year.Carlisle clashed with management in Detroit and was replaced by Larry Brown after the 2002-03 season. Donnie Walsh hired him to take over the Pacers. He went 181-147 in four seasons and 18-17 in the playoffs. His best season at Indiana was his first. In 2003-04 the Pacers posted a 61-21 record - the best mark in franchise history - and reached the Eastern Conference finals.Carlisle's reputation is that of a solid, demanding head coach with an emphasis on defense. His rigid style has also been known to grate on players. There was some thought that Carlisle might be too similar to Johnson. However, as of now, he appears to be closing in on his third head coaching job, this time with the Dallas Mavericks.
