Digitrax coming to Bay County
PANAMA CITYA Norcross, Ga.-based manufacturer is relocating to Panama City and could be operational at a new Transmitter Road facility by August, the Bay County Economic Development Alliance's executive director said Tuesday.Ted Clem said the Bay County Commission approved property tax abatements Tuesday morning for Digitrax, which manufactures digital command controls for high-end model railroad systems and Panama City Beach-based online travel company BookIt.com.Clem said Digitrax would start its Panama City operations with 10 employees and has plans to bump that number up to 50 by 2010.He said the company had looked at other areas in the region before deciding on the Panama City relocation."They've been enamored with the Gulf Coast for a while," Clem said.Clem said he did not know what the average wage would be for Digitrax employees, but he estimated it would be similar to area manufacturers such as Trane.Digitrax's new facility will be located at 2433 Transmitter Road.In a news release, Digitrax owner Zana Ireland said the company was looking forward to having a brand new facility that meets current business needs and is expandable for future growth. The Digitrax and BookIt property tax abatements, officially called the economic development ad valorem tax exemption, will be effective for 10 years and exempt the companies from paying property taxes, Clem said.He said the tax abatements, approved by voter referendum in 2000, act as incentives for new and existing companies. The EDA assisted the companies with the property tax abatement application process. He estimated that between eight and 12 local companies receive abatements, with Boyd Brothers Printing the last business to earn abatement approval.BookIt.com saw a 131-percent increase in bookings last year and a 141-percent increase in 2007 sales, company CEO and founder Bud Finlaw said in February. The online travel company has 200 employees, and broke ground recently on a new 20,000-square-foot Back Beach Road building, located about one mile east of Pier Park.BookIt.com has been operating out of a Beckrich Road office.Clem said the property tax abatements will allow BookIt.com to add 50 new employees in the first year of operation on Back Beach Road, with up to 200 new jobs created in three years."We certainly want to keep a successful company like that here in Bay County," Clem said.

O2 hints at 3G iPhone launch date
The 3G version of the iPhone will be unveiled "in the coming weeks", the boss of Apple's exclusive mobile phone partner in the UK and Ireland hinted today. Speculation is rife that Apple will reveal the 3G version of the phone at its Worldwide Developers' Conference in San Francisco, which starts on June 9. Apple has not released any technical details for the next-generation iPhone, but it is widely expected to include 3G connectivity. This would let users download data such as high-quality video much faster, and could even support mobile TV. Speaking after the announcement of O2's first-quarter results, the chairman and chief executive of Telefónica Europe Matthew Key said his company will be making an announcement with Apple in "the coming weeks". Asked exactly when the 3G phone will be available he said: "That's more of a question for Apple ... but over the coming weeks we will do a joint announcement with Apple as Telefónica Group". O2 has a "multi-year" exclusive deal to sell the iPhone in the UK and Ireland and will be the Californian group's partner for the new version of the phone. It has already sold out of the basic 8GB version of the current model. Key refused to comment on how many iPhones it has sold, but it added 206,000 new contract customers over the first three months of the year - a significant number of which are understood to have bought an iPhone. He also refuted suggestions that the deal O2 signed with Apple gives too much revenue back to the electronics firm. He pointed out that revenues in O2 UK grew almost 13% over the first quarter which "doesn't look like a bad deal to me". Key was also asked about his interest in buying the UK operations of Tiscali, which has already sparked interest from rivals such as Vodafone. He said the company had looked at it but "frankly the combination of the technology they are on, the quality of the customer base and the price they want (means) we are not interested."
