Even as analysts continue to worry about retailers' inventory status heading into the holiday season, they are celebrating at least one victory: J.C. Penney Co. saw same-store sales increase 2.3 percent over the previous year in August.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- J.C. Penney Co. said Thursday that its August sales at stores open at least one year rose 2.3%. Analysts, on average, had expected same-store sales to rise 1.6%, according to Thomson Reuters. Total sales for the four weeks ended August 28 rose 0.8% to $1.44 billion.Market P ... more »
