FHP: DNA and witness statements used to charge crash suspect
PANAMA CITY BEACHWitness statements and DNA on an airbag led authorities to arrest a Panama City Beach man in connection with a March fatal wreck.Jason Lee Ramey, 28, was charged earlier this week with leaving the scene of a crash with death. Investigators said Ramey was leaving the WJHG-TV News Channel 7 parking lot on March 7 at 12:30 a.m. in a 2005 Scion and pulled out into the path of a 2001 GMC Jimmy driven by Suksan Senakit, 21, of Panama City.Senakit swerved but his GMC struck the front of the Scion and overturned, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Senakit died from his injuries; his passenger, Russel Danas, 20, was seriously injured.According to a complaint affidavit filed by the Florida Highway Patrol, Ramey told investigators he was in the crash but was in the passenger seat and did not know the person who was driving. The complaint also states Ramey told others he was driving the Scion. He does not own the car."Investigation has shown there was no crash reported as he described," the complaint states.Investigators said they found Ramey's DNA on the driver-side airbag and no DNA on the passenger-side airbag. The grille and front bumper of the Scion were torn off, but Ramey left them in the street and drove away from the crash, investigators said.According to the Florida Department of Corrections, Ramey is on probation for burglary. His license was suspended for failure to pay a speeding ticket in 2005, court records show. In 2003, he pleaded no contest to knowingly driving while his license was suspended or revoked. He was being held in the Bay County Jail on $100,000 bond Friday night.
