A Fort Worth original: Mama's Pizza returning to Camp Bowie
By BARRY SHLACHTER Watch out, Domino’s. Fort Worth restaurateur Jordan Scott says the homegrown Mama’s Pizza is on the rise again.Scott, who inherited the West Berry Street location in Fort Worth from his late godfather, the longtime owner Frank "Chris" Farkas, said he has purchased control of Mama’s franchise rights after a three-year negotiation. He plans to bring Mama’s pies back to Camp Bowie Boulevard on Aug. 11, in an old Double Dave’s Pizzaworks that’s blocks from Mama’s once-most-popular location, which closed in 2004."Think of the most difficult thing. This was worse," Scott said of talks conducted through lawyers to buy the moribund franchise operation, whose owners hadn’t sold a single franchise since acquiring it from Farkas in 1999. The last owner was a maker of aircraft-testing equipment that had no restaurant or franchising experience. At one time, there were 18 Mama’s Pizza stores — nine owned by Farkas and nine by franchisees. Most fell victim to the 1980s oil crunch, Scott said. Today, Scott operates one of the 18 along with two new ones that he opened. Successors to independent franchisees operate other Mama’s Pizza stores in Plano and Lewisville. Neither of the latter adheres to the original recipe, he said. After Mama’s returns to Camp Bowie, Scott said he plans to expand by selling franchises beyond his own locations on West Berry, at Interstate 30 and Fielder Road in Arlington, and at Debbie Lane and U.S. 287 in Mansfield. The 32-year-old entrepreneur is convinced that the original recipe — traced to Mama Biggs, an employee of the first Mama’s on Rosedale Avenue near Texas Wesleyan University — and that the use of pure ingredients including 100 percent mozzarella will churn money-spinning franchise opportunities. What gives him confidence, Scott said, is the fact that sales have been booming despite the economic shoals in America now."Sales were up 27 percent for May and June, compared to last year," he said. "And that’s despite a 7 percent price increase." He declined to cite sales figures or net profits. No way will he operate more than four stores directly. "My phone is constantly ringing as it is," said Scott. The 6-foot-5-inch Scott played first base for Texas Wesleyan University’s baseball team before he was sidelined with an injury. He transferred to Texas Christian University, where he studied radio/television broadcasting and political science. He has worked at Mama’s since he was 16, going full time after graduating from TCU.The chain has had its ups and downs. For a "little over $500,000," Farkas in 1999 sold his top store — at 4801 Camp Bowie — to Nathan Brad Howell, son of a friend, along with rights to sell franchises and limiting Farkas’ ability to expand to just three additional stores beyond Loop 820. An avid hunter, collector of Comanche artifacts and a TCU booster, Farkas was operating just the West Berry pizzeria when he died at age 54 in 2003.Howell added a second-story lounge to the Camp Bowie store, but ended up shutting down the restaurant Nov. 1, 2004. The building was bulldozed this spring. His pizzerias in Hillsboro and Hot Springs, Ark., also closed, and there’s no record of him selling any Mama’s Pizza franchises. Howell did not return a call seeking comment.Ownership of franchise rights passed to Howell Instruments, a long-established, family-owned company started by his grandfather, John "Bear" Howell III."It’s public record," said John Howell IV, current chief executive of the Fort Worth testing-equipment company. "My father financed a family member who bought the company from Chris Farkas, and we just sold it to Jordan Scott. "It was an investment and not a very good investment," Howell said. "We never did operate it. We took over the business to sell it." After Bear Howell died in 2002, the estate tried to collect a debt of $650,000 from the grandson by suing him in state district court, according to court records. The younger Howell had pledged the Mama Pizza name and franchise rights as collateral, which became the property of Howell Instruments, the estate’s trustee, when the court ruled in the estate’s favor in 2006.Scott said he paid more than $250,000 to buy back the franchise rights — "worthless to anyone but me." "I know they tried to shop it and were turned down by a big restaurateur," said Scott, who did not need to finance the deal, explaining: "I’m a good saver."
