Tuition-lock program helps college freshman
EDMOND, Okla. - As an incoming freshman at the University of Central Oklahoma, Jordan Gilles might have to cope with massive tuition increases in each of the four years he is enrolled. But a new program that goes into effect this fall will allow Gilles and every other resident freshman at a comprehensive or regional state university to lock in their tuition at a guaranteed rate throughout their four-year degree program. "I think it's a good idea," Gilles said Wednesday in a hallway at the Nigh University Center on the UCO campus in Edmond. "I'd like to pay the same rate the whole time I'm here.read more

South Hadley High School to offer students discount parking on trial basis
Parking by students at the high school can be a problem. By SANDRA E. CONSTANTINE sconstantine@repub.com SOUTH HADLEY - Students at South Hadley High School who choose to park in the school's upper parking lot off Lincoln Street will get spaces at half the cost of those in the main lot starting in September on a trial basis. The School Committee yesterday approved cutting fees in the upper parking lot from $100 to $50 a year by a 4-0 vote on a motion by School Committee member JoAnn Jordan. Principal Daniel T. Smith asked for the change at the request of students at the school. Smith said parking now is on a first-come, first-served basis, and that many students park in fire lanes in the main lot to avoid having to use the upper lot and having a longer walk into the building. Smith said the new policy may help relieve some of the congestion in the main lot, which he speculated is caused by students feeling entitled to park there. There are 97 spaces in the main lot and another 45 spaces in the upper lot. The school can differentiate between the two types of permits by issuing different colored stickers, the principal said. "I think it is certainly worth trying," School Committee member Edward J. Boisselle said. However, Boisselle added that he does not want to see students coming in late because they have to park in the upper lot. School Committee Chairman William Adams said he would prefer the school not charge for parking and predicted that students using the upper lot will come to school late. "I'd love to see the fee gone because it is a major headache," Smith said. Adams said he does not want to see the parking divided along the lines of those who pay the $100 fee and those who are having trouble making ends meet. Smith said that should not be a problem as the spaces are sold to seniors first. Jordan said she prefers to think the thriftier students will opt for the $50 spaces. Voting in favor of the motion with Jordan were Adams, Boisselle and Lorraine Liantonio.

Pressure on MJ, Brown to make picks count
The Charlotte Bobcats' final predraft workout had just ended Wednesday when part-owner Michael Jordan grabbed a ball and quickly challenged the equipment manager to a shooting game.To make it fair, Jordan shot left-handed. Then Jordan's 15-footers kept clanging off the rim."His left hand is not as good as his right," coach Larry Brown said. "But if he was eligible we'd be OK."Instead, Jordan and Brown will be paired in the draft war room for the first time Thursday night.
