Fulton County puts on its biggest event of the year
WAUSEON - The grills are fired up. The animals are hosed down. The midway's humming. The highlight of the summer in Fulton County has arrived. The Fulton County Fair clamored into its 151st year yesterday with tractor pulls, livestock judging, and all the other traditional favorites.About 280,000 people are expected to enter the gates into a land of merry-go-rounds and funnel cakes before the fair concludes Thursday night. The affair is of such importance that all the schools in the county are dismissed Tuesday, and one of the smallest districts, Gorham Fayette, won't hold classes again until the fair is over."It is the event," said Dan Bruner, 52, of Pettisville, Ohio. "What makes Fulton County unique is this fair."The fair owes its reputation to no one attraction, Carl Buehrer, the fair board president, said."Some people like the shows," he said. "Horses are a big thing, saddle riding. We have lots and lots of merchants. A lot of people come for the fair food."It draws people from Michigan, Indiana, and beyond, Amy Ambrose, a spokesman for the fair, said. "We have people from all over the country," she said. "We have people who have grown up here and moved away. They take their vacation and come back to the fair."Kristie Ferris, who attended Evergreen Local schools and now lives in New York City, returns for the fair every year. "It's part of Americana," she said. "I love the whole 4-H thing. It teaches you the right moral issues."Among the fair's most loyal supporters are 1,000 junior fair participants, almost all of whom are members of 4-H or FFA.Alissa and Kristin Daniels, 12 and 10, respectively, of Swanton Township, took the day off from school yesterday to care for their horses, Brie and Buddy. The two members of the Horse Hogs 4-H Club compete in barrel racing every year."I feel like this is my home because it has so many animals, and I love animals," Kristin said."I like the rides, especially the Gravatron," Alissa added.Arts and crafts also are a draw.Renee Mungons, who teaches home economics at Emmanuel Christian School in Toledo, and Shelby County resident Liz Schnell yesterday tasted more than 100 pies and cakes in judging the culinary competition."That looks beautiful," she said, cutting a slice from a pecan pie. "We always have to keep our eyes out for the possible best of show."Gregg Randall of the National Tractor Pullers Association in Columbus said the Fulton County Fair is a must for regional pullers. Competitors vied last night for the $1,000 first-place prize."This is a huge pull," he said. "This is one of the biggest events of the year."Carol Mull, 73, and other members of the Aetna Grange were roasting 10 pallets of 30 chicken halves yesterday at lunchtime. Members have served hot meals to fair-goers for 54 years, she said.Mrs. Mull is one of the campers who have set up their home for the week on the fairgrounds' 580 campsites."I love everything about the fair," the Delta, Ohio, area resident said.Activities continue this weekend with harness racing, shows by the Van Dells and the Beach Boys, a cheerleading competition, Junior Fair horse show, and Rough Truck Challenge with the Dodge Raminator.Gate admission is $5 for adults and free for youth 15 and under who are accompanied by an adult.
