South Hadley police say 12-year-old drowning victim did not know how to swim
Anyone using the Connecticut River who does not know how to swim should wear a life jacket, a police officer said.This is a 7:57 p.m. update of a story originally posted at 7:21 this morning. By GEORGE GRAHAM and SANDRA E. CONSTANTINE Staff writers SOUTH HADLEY - South Hadley police said today that 12-year-old boy who drowned in the Connecticut River Saturday afternoon did not know how to swim. Sgt. Robert J. Whelihan said Monday that the boy, Anthony Day, who had been walking on a sandbar on the South Hadley side of the river below Veterans Bridge, stepped into the water and was sucked into an eddy, where the water was as much as 12 to 14 feet deep. Neither the boy nor his stepfather, Dana Samkin, of South Hadley, who was on the shore of the Beachgrounds park, could swim, Whelihan said. "He stepped into the deep section of the river. If he could swim, he probably would have been all right," Whelihan said. Anthony disappeared below water about 3 p.m., according to Whelihan, who said someone who had been camping on an island in the river called police. Whelihan said he and patrolman Kristin Leary took off their shoes and weapons and dove into the water numerous times to rescue the boy but to no avail. Divers from the town's fire departments pulled the boy from the river about a half hour later. Efforts to resuscitate Anthony on shore failed as did efforts at Holyoke Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Whelihan said. The boy, who lived in New Hampshire with his father, had been visiting his mother, Debra Samkin, of 66 Bridge St., Whelihan said. The police officer said the eddy into which Anthony was sucked is about 100 feet in diameter and about 12 feet from the shore of the South Hadley side of the river. "Anybody who goes near the river who cannot swim should be wearing a life vest," Whelihan said. "The river is just a dangerous place, even when it is calm."
