SEC media say Auburn will win West, UF in East
Auburn will win the SEC West and Florida will win the SEC East and the league title game, or so said the media at SEC Kickoff 2008. Alabama was picked third in the West. The league office made the announcement Friday morning.``I think some players will embrace it,'' said Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville. ``But it has nothing to do with reality.'' Tuberville said being picked first was ``different'' because Auburn doesn't have a proven quarterback.Auburn had a league-high nine players make first- or second-team All-SEC. Florida had five first-teamers, but no one on the second team. More details and the All-SEC teams are on The News' Auburn blog. Here is the predicted order of finish:From the SEC: Of the 70 members of the media who voted, Florida was named SEC Champion on 36 ballots, Georgia on 18, Auburn 13 and LSU, Tennessee and Ole Miss one each. In the Eastern Division, Florida had 45 first-place votes, Georgia (23) and Tennessee (2). The Gators, Bulldogs and Volunteers were selected 1-2-3 in the Eastern Division followed by South Carolina, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. In the Western Division, Auburn was named first place on 48 ballots, while LSU received 21 first place votes and Ole Miss 1. The predicted order of finish in the Western Division was Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Arkansas.SEC PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISHSEC Champion - Florida (36), Georgia (18), Auburn (13), LSU (1), Tennessee (1), Ole Miss (1).EASTERN DIVISION1. Miles faces questions about Alabama joke
LSU coach Les Miles found a way to take some of the focus off his players before coming into this state.Defending a national title? Finding a quarterback? Those were all hot topics during the Tigers' visit to Southeastern Conference media days on Wednesday, but so was Miles' playful poke at the University of Alabama - coached, of course, by his LSU predecessor Nick Saban.

Houston Nutt addressed his 11th SEC football media day, but first since skipping from Arkansas to Ole Miss.``We've had a good transition so far. It seems like I've been here a long time already,'' Nutt said.Ole Miss knows about trading coaches. Tommy Tuberville left the Rebels for Auburn way back when. Tuberville and Auburn visit Nutt and Ole Miss on Oct. 1.NEWS STAFF/HAL YEAGER Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said he already feels at home in Oxford since leaving Arkansas to take over the Rebels.Nutt, in answering a question about former coach Ed Orgeron's reputation as a good recruiter, said the Rebels' lineup has holes.``There are a lot of players who didn't always make it to campus. My whole problem, you've got a bunch of guys who haven't experienced a lot of success the last three or four years,'' Nutt said.On the Plus One playoff: ``I love bowl games. If you keep the bowls, I'm for Plus One. But the Final Four, or Final Eight, I don't see how you do that.''Nutt said he didn't know if Jerrell Powe, the one-time Auburn commitment and LSU signee who is on the Ole Miss campus, will ever be cleared to play by the NCAA.``I hope so. We're waiting just like y'all,'' Nutt said.A decision could come this week.

Photo from al.com - Everything Alabama Saban on the freshmen, Miles' comments, and other stuff...
Unlike last year's SEC Kickoff 2008, Alabama coach Nick Saban seemed much more comfortable at this year's version.Maybe it had something to do with all those questions a year ago about leaving the Miami Dolphins for Alabama - you know, whether he deceived fans and the media about his interest in the Crimson Tide job before actually taking it.NEWS STAFF/HAL YEAGER Alabama football coach Nick Saban addresses the media while a monitor shows him walking the sideline during a 2007 game. With some 800 members of the media turning out at the Wynfrey, considered the largest turnout yet for one of these preseason conference settings, Saban talked about a variety of topics. Here's some of what he said:-- On all that stuff LSU coach Les Miles said last week in New Orleans with a big LSU crowd on hand - that Alabama hadn't fared so well against Louisiana teams: "We need to earn the respect we get."--What about how many freshmen he may wind up playing this year, given the fact his team has nine seniors on it: "It's up to them," he said. "They create the expectations. Before this, they had tremendous expectations because of recruiting services. But it's up to them. We'll have some on offense, as many as five or six on defense with the linebackers and the secondary."On the seniors: "There are only nine," Saban said, "but it's (partially) up to them to create the direction for the younger players."On off-the-field issues:"We're never pleased when an individual (Tide linebacker Jimmy Johns, who faces six felony drug counts) embarrasses the organization. When one fails -- or we fail them -- everyone knows about it. But what you don't see is the 25 other guys who have done a great job of improving their chances of being successful. We have many players who have made significant progress."See Friday's Birmingham News for more on Saban's visit to SEC media days.

Georgia arrives in Hoover as the team to beat
All eyes were on Georgia football coach Mark Richt this morning. He'd better get used to it, because all eyes are on the Georgia Bulldogs this fall. After finishing as national bridesmaid to LSU in 2007, Georgia (11-2, capped with a 41-10 rout of Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl) is widely considered the team to beat in 2008.Richt, appearing at SEC Kickoff 2008 at the Wynfrey, believes his team has spent the offseason moving in the right direction.``We gauge our players' attitude by the work ethic they have. I've seen nothing but hard work by these players,'' Richt said. The question this year: can Georgia climb one spot in the final AP rankings, and finish as national champion?``Our goal is to focus on the moment, not way down the road,'' said Richt, adding that talking non-stop about the BCS title can be distracting because ``it's too long to be chewing on that bone.``It's hard to set a goal you can't control.''Last year's success is part of the reason for the hype. Another reason is the tandem of quarterback Matthew Stafford and running back Knowshon Moreno, arguably as good a 1-2 punch as there is throughout college football. But the biggest obstacle is a schedule riddled with pitfalls. Georgia must play road games at South Carolina, LSU, Kentucky and Auburn, home games with Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia Tech, plus the annual trip to Jacksonville to meet Florida, the SEC's other predicted national title contender.``Our schedule, the teams we're playing, their coaches have accounted for nine national championships,'' Richt said.
