Malta and Gozo: Easy rider on the med
I sat waiting, focused ahead. The cross-traffic started thinning out. I gave a twist with my right hand, just a touch, till I felt the bite. The lights changed to green. I gave it a bit more. The automatic clutch caught, and I was rolling. More with the wrist, and I was going fast enough to lift my feet and tuck them on board. Sheer bliss! Like the best bits of flying and skiing rolled into one.

Majid's Magic Touch
Majid’s Magic Touch World Pool Masters / Las Vegas, NV by InsidePOOL Staff Imran “The Maharajah” Majid ousted 2007 Player of the Year Shane Van Boening from the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters in the first billiard match of the afternoon. The tournament, which began May 9, is presented by Matchroom Sport and hosted by the Riviera Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Watched by Majid’s parents, the match began closely enough, with Van Boening winning the lag and breaking and running out the first rack. The next three games were traded until the score reached 2-all, at which point Van Boening broke and ran the fifth and then took ball in hand after a foul by Majid to gain a two-rack advantage. To the dismay of the U.S. fans in the audience, however, that was to be the last game won by the 24-year-old “South Dakota Kid.” Uncharacteristic and costly misses by Van Boening ended up being his downfall, and Majid could do no wrong, reaching the hill 7-4. On his last break, Majid pocketed the 7 ball and had a road map to get out, winning the match 8-4 to advance. The 18-year-old WPA World Junior champion, Ko Pin-yi, came up against five-time World Pool Masters winner Ralf Souquet, who also recently took the World 8-Ball title. In a match dubbed as “youth versus experience,” youth prevailed. Ko took the first three racks uncontested before Souquet got on the board after a foul by Ko. Souquet came up empty on the following break, and it looked as though Ko might take control again, but instead he hung up the 1 ball, and the German veteran got another game under his belt to bring the score to 4-2. View the World Pool Masters image gallery (/gallery2/v/Pool+Tournaments/world-pool-master-2008/) The wily Souquet used his moving skills to win the next rack by three-fouling Ko. However, this only served as fuel for the fire, for Ko surged ahead, winning the next three racks in a row to reach the hill 7-3. Souquet had two chances in the last rack but missed the 1 ball twice, handing the match to Ko 8-3. In the final match in the afternoon session, a “Tornado” took Niels Feijen by storm in the form of Malta’s Tony Drago. Barely waiting for the cue ball to stop moving before taking his next shot, Drago raced around the table, taking two racks for every one of Feijen’s until the score reached 4-2 in his favor. A break and run by Drago and then a failed safety attempt by the Dutchman put Drago up 6-2. But “The Terminator” was not about to give up his chance to advance. When Drago came up dry on his following break, Feijen not only dished up but then broke and ran the next rack. To cement his comeback attempt, Feijen then dropped the 9 ball on his next break, drawing within a game of Drago at 6-5. However, Drago reached the hill when Feijen failed to hide the 1 ball. Feijen retaliated when Drago badly missed the 6 ball in the next two racks, making it a hill-hill challenge. Feijen pushed out to a jump shot on the 2 ball in the final rack, but when Drago passed, the Dutchman left the 2 wide open for Drago to clear the rack and win 8-7. Saturday evening’s matches will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature Corey Deuel versus Christian Reimering of Germany, Daryl Peach versus Mika Immonen, and Rodney Morris versus Alex Pagulayan. World Champ Peach Completes Euro Mosconi Cup Line-up
World Champ Peach Completes Euro Mosconi Cup Line-upDeuel makes appearance No.4English billiard player Daryl Peach, who last Sunday became the first ever Englishman to lift pool’s most coveted title, the WPA World Pool Championship, becomes the fifth and final player to be named in the European side for the 14th annual Mosconi Cup which takes place at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas from December 13 – 16.Peach, the 35 year-old veteran from Blackpool, recorded a string of superb performances at the Araneta Coliseum, Manila, culminating in a magnificent 17-15 victory over Filipino Roberto Gomez in the championship match. The World Champion will be making his second Mosconi Cup appearance and the omens are good. He was a member of the 1995 side that won in Basildon, England. “America is a very strong side but at the Mosconi Cup it always comes down to bottle and this year we have a team to compete and take the title,” said Peach.“I always knew I was capable of getting back in the team. I played in it in 95 and I was unlucky not to get in it a few times after that. I always knew I had the bottle which is what is needed to play in this tournament and now with my World Pool Championship victory I have proved it again,” he added.Taking the fifth and final spot for Team USA is Ohio’s Corey Deuel who will be making his fourth appearance in the annual USA v Europe match. Deuel, 30, sports a nine wins from 13 games record in the competition and won the final match of the competition last year to allow the Americans to retain the trophy.“It’s always a great honour to represent the United States in the Mosconi Cup. There’s something about the event that gets everyone going – players and fans alike – and I will be doing my very best,” said Deuel. This year will see the 14th running of pool’s answer to the Ryder Cup and the current score stands at 10 ½ - 2 ½ to the Americans. 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship Field Down to 64
2007 Philippines World Pool Championship Field Down to 64Billiards action has concluded on the final day of round one action at the 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship at the Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City, Manila as the 128 man field has been reduced to 64 for the straight knock-out stages of the event. The most dominant representation comes from the Philippines with 13 players in the last 64 shake up, closely followed by Chinese Taipei with 10. Disappointingly, the USA with an original entry of 11 now only has four survivors in round two. There are now five days to go in the $400,000 event which is televised live throughout Asia on the ESPN Star network as well as Sky Sports in the UK.There was plenty of top quality action on day four as players fought for their chance to progress. Big name victims included former two-time champion Johnny Archer who lost to 18 year-old Taiwanese Wu Yu-lun and then went down to another two-time champion Chao Fong-pang 9-3 to exit the tournament.Rodolfo Luat, a quarter finalist here last year, went two and out at the hands of Toh Lian Han (Singapore) and England’s Daryl Peach. Rodney Morris, highly fancied in some quarters, looked good winning his opener 9-0 against Dave Reljic of Australia, but then lost successive matches to improving Swiss player Marco Tshudi and then unheralded Dane Bahram Lotfy to book an early flight home.Playing in his first World Pool Championship, Shane Van Boening, the current US Open Champion eased his way into round two with a hill-hill win over Chang Yau-mau, and then beat Scotland’s Pat Holtz 9-4 to set up a last 64 clash with Antonio Gabica.Other eagerly anticipated round two games include Jeff De Luna v Lee Van Corteza in a battle of the local hotshots, while Ronnie Alcano continues his title defence against Daryl Peach.Efren Reyes, who seems to carry then hopes of the nation on his shoulders, will be under pressure as he goes up against European No.1 Konstantin Stepanov (Russia) who looked good today with two straight wins to qualify.2005 Champion, Wu Chia-ching of Taiwan, faces a tester against in-form Italian Fabio Petroni on Table 2, while Alex Pagulayan who took the title in ’04, can look ahead to a clash with little known Vietnamese player Pham Tuan Ngoc. The double elimination format in the opening round has seen a slew of top players make their way through and there will be plenty of top class 9 ball action as the drama unfolds at the Araneta Coliseum. More Big Names at 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship
More Big Names at 2007 Philippines World Pool ChampionshipA total of 32 billiard players have now earned their positions in the knock-out stages at the 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship. A further four groups played on Sunday in a total of 40 matches in the $400,000 event. The most impressive showing of the day came from Francisco Bustamante of Philippines, who ran seven straight racks against Jeong Young-hwa of Korea en-route to a 9-0 whitewash. Also in Group 9, Oliver Ortmann was one of a trio of former champions who made their way through with 2-0 records, including a superb 9-6 win over American Corey Deuel. But Deuel (pictured above) was celebrating later in the day as he battled back to eliminate Filipino Antonio Lining, who had the unwanted record of being the first player from the Philippines to not make the Last 64.Another former world champion performing well was Mika Immonen (Finland), who sealed his passage with an ill-tempered win over Americas Jeremy Jones, and the Philippines' Alex Pagulayan.Other Filipinos advancing were Ramil Gallego who hammered Asian 9 Ball Tour winner Chang Jung-ling of Taiwan 9-1 to be the top seed from Group 7.Leevan Corteza also went through but not before dropping a game to battling Serbian Goran Mladenovic. The Pinoy star dumped Jeremy Jones out of the competition in the final match on the Group 12 losers' side. For Mladenovic it was a day to remember. Following his against-the-odds win over Corteza, he was well beaten by rising star Karl Boyes of England. However, he made it through at the last with a gritty showing against Tyler Edey (Canada), that saw Edey dog a 9 ball to gift the Serb a 9-7 win.Other notables on their way home include 2004 World Pool Championship runner-up Chang Pei-wei (Taiwan) and quality Filipino Antonio Lining. The remaining 64 players compete on Monday and Tuesday, with the last 64 phase commencing on Wednesday 7th November.Taking place over nine days, the event is televised live for over 60 hours by ESPN Star Sports of Asia and Sky Sports in the UK as well as being available over the internet via this website. The format is groups of eight players competing in double elimination, with two wins seeing you through to the next round and two losses spelling defeat.Play starts tomorrow (Monday) at 3.30pm as a further four groups battle it out.Among those in action include - Ralf Souquet (Germany), Raj Hundal (England), Thorsten Hohmann (Germany), Fu Che-wei (Chinese Taipei), Thomas Engert (Germany), Li He-wen (China) and the unpredictable American Earl 'The Pearl' Strickland.Local fans should have plenty to cheer about as Leonardo Andam, Jeff De Luna and Marlon Manalo are all in action.Countries represented so far in the Last 64 1.
