Manitoba: Toews considered for federal court job
Senior federal cabinet minister Vic Toews is being consideredfor a judicial appointment to the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench, the Winnipeg Free Press has learned. Several justice sources say Mr.Toews -- Tory MP for Provencher, Man., and a key member of PrimeMinister Stephen Harper's cabinet as Treasury Board president -- isa strong candidate to fill vacancies on the federal court in eitherBrandon or Dauphin, Man. A federal selection committee has beenlaying the groundwork for the appointment by calling provincialjustice officials with questions about Mr. Toews, sources say. "I'msurprised the announcement hasn't been made yet,'' a highly-placedlegal source said this week. A spokesman for Mr. Toews' office inOttawa said he had heard nothing about such a move. It's likely theappointment is being postponed until after Parliament breaks for thesummer in hopes of keeping the issue out of the House of Commons andthe scrutiny of opposition parties during question period.
