A total of 257 players bought in to the record-setting event. Some of the world's most elite poker players, including Doyle Brunson, Liz Lieu, J.J. Liu, Mel Judah, Todd Brunson, Nam Le, Kenny Tran, David "Chino" Rheem, Johnny Chan and J.C. Tran all took part in the high stakes poker tournament, which was ultimately won by Timoshenko. Timoshenko, who is of Ukrainian decent but currently resides in the United States, entered the final table as one of the middle stacks but wasted no time in going to work. He quickly eliminated Wah Cheong Wong, who started the day as one of the chip leaders, and then busted Quang Nguyen to add more ammunition to his stack. Several hands later Timoshenko busted Julio Diaz to take a massive chip lead on the field with over $1.6 million chips to his name. It proved to be too much for the rest of the players at the final table and by the time Timoshenko entered heads-up play against Joon Hee Yea he held a chip advantage of $2.3 million to Yea's $257,000. Timoshenko's victory marked the conclusion of another successful APT Macau. The APT continues to be one of the most popular tournaments in Asia and with sponsors like Titan Poker and the iPoker network it seems destined to grow even larger. The next stop for the APT will be Seoul, South Korea, although the dates have yet to be released. Record numbers take seats in APT Macau
The landmark $5,300 buy-in main event played two Day 1s, with the second bringing in 257 players and record crowds to the casino. According to APT officials, six new state-of-the-art shuffling machines have been added to cope with the demand as well. "Adding eight tables to the APT poker room may not sound like a big move to the well established western poker community but you have to remember that this is Macau where baccarat is king," said Tom Hall, CEO of AsianLogic. "Poker is in its infancy - this is a significant step forward and further evidence of the growth and potential in this market." Some of the major players spotted in Macau for the tournament include Johnny Chan, Todd Brunson, Doyle Brunson, Liz Lieu, J.C. Tran, Kenny Tran, John Juanda, Nam Le, Steve Sung, Huck Seed, David Rheem, Mel Judah, Aaron Kanter, J.J. Liu and more. Quinn Do is also taking in the event after having won the celebrity charity event that kicked off the APT's stop in Macau earlier this week. Many of those same players are expected to check out the high roller event as well. The APT is offering a $1 million HKD buy-in cash event that will be filmed for television broadcast as well. The starting blinds for the game are $3,000/$6,000 HKD, and straddling and blinds will be raised at the discretion of the players. Todd Brunson, Johnny Chan, Nam Le, J.C. Tran, John Juanda, Sean Buchanan and more are expected to all sit in at some point. The early action in the game has already seen Juanda taking a $1 million HKD pot off Chris Parker. "There's such a buzz about this game, it's difficult to predict how high the stakes will go or how long it could go on for," said Parker, APT CEO. "I'm up against the ropes, but you've seen Rocky, I am on my way back!" APT starts Tuesday with charity event
First up on the agenda is the opening of the APT Poker Room on Level 2 of the Galaxy StarWorld Casino. The opening will take place at 3:30 p.m., and will be followed at 4:30 p.m. by a book signing by Doyle Brunson in the lobby. Brunson took some much needed time off in Montana to get away from poker for a while after the World Series of Poker wrapped up in Las Vegas, and he's forgoing the World Poker Tour stop at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles to test the poker waters in Macau instead. The 10-time WSOP bracelet holder will be on hand to meet fans until 6 p.m. and sign copies of his books. At 7 p.m., the poker action will finally get started with a special charity Celebrity Poker Challenge. Matt Savage is hosting the event, and all proceeds will go to the Caritas De Macau. Caritas De Macau is the social service organization of Macau. Its goal is to provide services to the individuals, families, communities and societies to help them live in a more humane condition economically, morally and spiritually. Brunson is planning to play in the charity event, and Manny Pacquiao, the first Asian boxer to win four world titles in different divisions, will be bringing his fight to the poker felt. The charity game will also feature actor Michael Wong, singer Renee Dai and commentator Angie Mak. Adding even more glamour to the event will be models Natalie Ng, Erica Yuen, Janice Man, Cha Cha and Wylien Chiu, plus Miss Hong Kong winner Tracy Ip and glamour model Tila Tequila. "We are delighted to bring the APT to Macau and really excited about offering Asia's largest ever guaranteed prize pool. The charity poker challenge will be good fun, and, most importantly, it is an aid of a brilliant charity in Caritas De Macau," said Chris Parker, APT CEO. "I'm looking forward to Manny Pacquiao going head-to-head with Doyle Brunson," Parker said. "Manny never goes down but will we see the flyweight king get knocked out by the heavyweight poker legend? That said, perhaps both will get distracted by all the models at the table!" After the Celebrity Poker Challenge the APT will also host an exclusive after party at StarWorld's famous Whisky Bar. Participants may want to take it a bit easy that night, however, if they're planning on playing in the APT Macau main event the next day. The main event has a $5,300 buy-in and is guaranteeing a $1.5 million prize pool. Poker pros from around the world such as Johnny Chan, Doyle and Todd Brunson, J.C. Tran, Kenny Tran, John Juanda, Liz Lieu, Nam Le, Quinn Do, Steve Sung, Mel Judah, Huck Seed and more are expected to play in the two-day event. A few of them may event stick around to check out the exclusive high-roller event as well. On Friday, the APT will host a $1 Million HKD buy-in high-stakes cash game featuring the world's best players. Brunson will also be on hand Wednesday, Aug. 27, for a second book signing from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Related Articles: Gold medalist invited to APT MacauBrunson family to head to APT MacauAPT Philippines champ heading to MacauVisit PokerListings.com

APPT draws big poker stars
PokerStars announced this week there is already a line-up of 20 top poker champions eager to hit the felt for Season 2 of the APPT in Macau. The latest addition to the list of players planning to be there when the cards hit the felt Sept. 1 is Johnny Chan. The 10-time World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner has more than $6.7 million in tournament earnings to his name and plans to add to that in Macau. "It's great for Poker in Asia that there's a major tournament like this here in Macau," said Chan. "It's attracting all top players in the sport, and letting the world know that there is real poker here, and real poker players here, and that anybody can win millions of dollars." Chan won't be the only Main Event champion at the event either. Joe Hachem, the 2005 WSOP champions, is planning to play as well as Scotty Nguyen. Some of the other notables joining them will be Bertrand Grospellier, Lee Nelson, Isabelle Mercier, Van Nguyen, Men "The Master" Nguyen, Barry Greenstein, Mike McDonald, Mel Judah, Daniel Schrieber, Harry Demetriou, Anthony Reviera and Isaac Galazan. The winners from the 2007 APPT season will also return to the tour in Macau to try for a second win. Dinh Le, from Vietnam, is the returning Macau main event champion. Eric Assadourian, from Australia, also returns as the Macau High Roller Event champion from 2007. The APPT Seoul champion, Ziv Bachar, and the 2007 APPT Sydney champion, Grant Levy will both be in town to play as well. "We are excited to have so many of the world's top players coming to the Grand Waldo Casino in Macau this year," said Jeffrey Haas, President of the PokerStars APPT. "It's a testament to the success of Season 1 that champions such as Chan, Joe Hachem, Scotty Nguyen, Men 'The Master' Nguyen and Barry Greenstein are eager to compete on the felt during our second season." Haas said the APPT is privileged to continue leading the growth of poker and poker culture in Asia. They're expecting local and regional player participation to at least double in this year's events. "The PokerStars.net APPT is taking poker to a new level in Asia Pacific, and when this Macau tournament is broadcast on TV around the world we expect this growth to continue," Haas said. The PokerStars APPT Season 2 stop in Macau will include the $25,000 HKD main event running Sept. 1-6. The high roller event with a $150,000 HKD buy-in will also return, playing Sept. 7-9. Both events have a guaranteed $10 million HKD prize pool and will be televised. PokerStars is expecting more than 500 players for the main event, so it is likely to set a new record for player numbers and prize pool for poker tournaments in Asia.
