Triathlete's death called accidental
PANAMA CITY BEACHThe Bay County Medical Examiner's Office has labeled a Georgia triathlete's death an accidental drowning.Jeff Martin, office director, said Wednesday that Patrick Kane's body was not autopsied by request of Kane's family. Kane, 38, of Roswell, Ga., was pulled from the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday during the 1.2-mile swim portion of the Gulf Coast Triathlon. He died at Bay Medical Center a short time later.Martin said Kane's organs were harvested for donation and some pathological information will be gathered from those organs. But, he said, the cause of Kane's death would be ruled accidental drowning regardless of what mechanism caused his collapse in the water. He said these cases do not have to be autopsied and the family preferred Kane's body not be examined."Based on the circumstances pertaining to the death, we've ruled this a drowning and it's an accident," Martin said. Kane was a sales manager with Hilti Co., a construction equipment company. He finished the Gulf Coast Triathlon, which also consists of a 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run, in a time of 6 hours, 5 minutes, 35 seconds in 2007.His family told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution he had no known health issues."He was a big, strapping guy, and an avid triathlete," said Kane's mother-in-law, Nancy Gaines of Novato, Calif.
