Samford picked last in SoCon football poll
Coach Pat Sullivan's Bulldogs enter their first season in the Southern Conference this year with a pair of road games before preseason No. 1 pick Appalachian State comes to Seibert Stadium on Oct. 11.The Samford Bulldogs got little respect - as expected - in their first venture into the Southern Conference. The league's nine head football coaches predicted Samford would finish last in the SoCon in its first season in a new league.Appalachian State, the three-time defending national champion in the Football Championship Subdivision, was a near-unanimous choice to win the league title at the 2008 SoCon Football Rouser in Greenville, S.C.The Mountaineers got eight first-place votes and 64 total points in the poll in which coaches were not allowed to vote for their own squad. Appalachian State finished 13-2 in 2007 with the momentous victory at Michigan.Elon (7-4 last season) was picked second, followed by Wofford, Georgia Southern, Furman, The Citadel, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Samford. Samford was shut out in the preseason All-SoCon team ballot.
