Breaking One's Silence
Well there's no doubt about it focusing on crime trends is truly a collaborative effort--which is why in recent years more and more law enforcement agencies are depending on the help of the common citizen. But what about when fear prevents witnesses from coming forward. One organization says looking the other way is actually doing more harm than good & now acommunity leader breaks his silence. Something he says others should do as well. This come after an innocent bystander was fatally shot in west Greenville."They feel that as long as it's not knocking on my door it doesn't bother me,” said Calvin Henderson, President of the Pitt County NAACP. “But now here it is innocent people are getting killed."According to a report filed by Greenville police the latest victim was an innocent bystander caught in the middle of a fight that escalated into a shooting early Sunday morning in west Greenville. This comes after the department reported a 13% drop in the number of major crimes including homicides compared to this same time last year.Chief Anderson attributes the drop to the change in the way policing is done he also looks to the community to fill gaps that the police cannot. But when no ones willing to speak it makes looking for the bad guys even harder.Relatives of the victim tell 9 On Your Side 48-year-old Valerie Tyson was actually shot at the intersection of Cherry Street and Vance Street. And while neighbors expressed concerns off camera neither they nor relatives were willing to go into details on camera. “Dr. King said at the end of the day it's not my enemy I have to worry about but its silent friends and that’s the same thing, Henderson said. “We sit back and we don't want to say anything. But what are you doing to do when they knock on your door?"For now an innocent bystander is dead. And finding the shooter is still under investigation--even if no ones willing to speak. Valerie Tyson was transported to PCMH Sunday morning where she was pronounced dead.If anyone has any information you're asked to call Pitt-Greenville Crimestoppers at (252) 758-7777.
