Aspiring Jockeys Receive Rare Training Opportunity
Two-time derby winner Chris McCarron is teaching college students everything they need to know about becoming a jockey, including how to deal with tragedies like the one involving Eight Belles at the Derby.McCarron, a retired Hall of Fame jockey started North American Racing Academy with Kentucky Community and Technical College System. The only jockey academy in North America, according to McCarron."It just boggles my mind that the U.S. has the best racing in world but we've never had a place to train the students," McCarron said.Students learn everything from commercial breeding practices to financial management in the classroom. In the barn they get hands on training. McCarron says it's a broad program so students can pursue other careers in the field if they decide not to race.Sunday NARA students graduate and will race with their teacher at the Kentucky Horse Park at 4:15pm.200 applicants from around the world are hoping to get in to the academy in the fall.
