AJM says actually winning is 'weird'
Lindsey Brinton of Utah had already been a first runner-up in the Miss America's Outstanding Teen pageant. It was an honor, said her mother, Sally Brinton. "But it wasn't winning," she said. Now Brinton, 18, has that win. After the America's Junior Miss national final Saturday night, Brinton left the stage with a $50,000 scholarship and the title of America's Junior Miss. She also won an additional $4,000 in scholarships after placing in the top five in four of the five judging categories. When the competition began, Brinton said she did not think about who might win. She said she focused on performing her best, which led her to be one of the eight finalists. After the second and first runner-ups had been announced, Brinton was still standing along with five other finalists before the winner was announced. "I was just thinking that it just seems so weird," she said. "I thought, 'What if they really say Utah?'" Her mother was the only family member in the audience to watch her receive the America's Junior Miss medallion, as her father was in Massachusetts watching her 20-year-old sister, Stephanie, compete in the Miss Massachusetts pageant. Her mother called him before they announced the winner so that he could hear her name and the cheers that erupted in the audience, said Brinton, the sixth of seven children in her family. Her other siblings watched the competition online, which was shown live by NBC 15 on the company's Web site. Brinton received a flood of e-mails and text messages from them to congratulate her after her win. She said she had at least 20 text messages from friends and family that she had not read yet. Even Utah's governor Jon Huntsman called to congratulate her. Brinton said the governor's wife, Mary Kaye, called her mother to say that the governor wanted to speak with Brinton because he had watched the AJM final show online. "He had to wait for two minutes on the phone before he could talk to me," Brinton said. Huntsman told her that he and the whole state were proud of her accomplishments, she said. For the next year, Brinton will travel to talk about the Be Your Best Self campaign, started by the AJM organization. Every time she returns to Mobile, Brinton will stay with her host family from the past two weeks, Joy and Reed Gardner. Brinton said she already calls them mom and dad, too. As America's Junior Miss, Brinton said she hopes to expand a program she started in Utah to teach elementary school students about famous composers. She went to local elementary schools and played a piece by a composer from each of the four eras of classical music, and then she talked to the students about who the composers were and what they did. "I would love to take the program everywhere," Brinton said. "I want to work with children." As Brinton begins her year as America's Junior Miss, she will have at least one adviser close at hand. She will be a freshman at Harvard University in the fall, where Nora Ali, America's Junior Miss in 2007, is a sophomore. "She (Ali) always says that we need to get together and have fun when I get there," Brinton said. On July 6, Brinton will start on a one-week media tour in New York City. Before she takes off, she will go back home to Salt Lake City, Utah. "All I want to do is take a long nap," Brinton said.
