Broadcom buying AMD digital TV business for $192.8M
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. said Monday it has agreed to sell its digital-television business to Broadcom Corp. for $192.8 million. Dirk Meyer, the Sunnyvale-based company’s new president and chief executive, said the sale will make the chip maker (NYSE: AMD) “leaner and more focused while seeking to create a business model to deliver sustainable profitability,” He also said it will lower the amount of revenue the company needs to break even. Irvine-based Broadcom (Nasdaq: BRCM) said it will now be able to offer a complete line of digital TV products, from low- to high-end. About 530 AMD employees will join Broadcom as a result of the deal. Meyer became CEO of AMD last week, taking over at a company that has reported seven consecutive quarterly losses as it struggles to compete with Santa Clara-based Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC). Intel employs 6,000 at its Folsom campus. (AMD) (INTC)
