Food drive's total tops last year : News - Local News
The 16th year of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive exceeded last year's collection total in the Yuma area, according to Yuma Community Food Bank, its beneficiary. On Saturday, area residents donated a total of 21,603 pounds of food, or 700 pounds more than the 20,900 pounds collected last year, said Shelly Barbato, food bank campaign director. Area residents were asked to leave nonperishable items such as canned soups and vegetables, pasta, rice and cereal alongside their mailboxes for pickup by area postal carriers making their mail deliveries Saturday. The food collected Saturday will go to the food bank, which distributes food boxes to the hungry and supplies area social service agencies that serve meals to those in need. Barbato said this year's donations in the Yuma area will provide 14,500 meals. The Stamp Out Hunger campaign is a nationwide effort by the National Association of Letter Carriers.

After breaking Bob Friend's 2006 competitive-round course record of 69 by a stroke, Devlin will have his shot again."I drove the ball well," Devlin said. "The course was great. A couple of greens were lightning fast. All were just so fast. You have to keep it as simple as you can. I drove the ball in the middle of the fairway. It didn't play as hard as it can."The top four golfers qualified for the sectional qualifier, held June 2 at Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta.Mark Strickland from Woodstock, Ga., was second with a 2-under 70, and Garrett Osborn from Birmingham was third with a 72. Tallahassee's Ken Stevenson was the fourth to qualify, with a 73.The two alternates were Swede David Hanson and Hombre Golf Club pro Heath West. They defeated Todd Bailey in a three-hole playoff. All three shot 74.West was the top local participant and Richard Maddox was next best with a 75. Out of the 63 who signed up for the event, 55 finished, including Mosley senior Zach Primavera (86) and Dolphins golf coach Mike Riley (77).For Stevenson, who played with Devlin, Monday was the breakthrough he's been waiting more than a decade for.In his 12 previous local qualifiers, the best the 47-year-old insurance agent from Tallahassee finished was as an alternate. Four birdies helped him stay in the top four this year."It's awesome," a relieved Stevenson said. "It played tough. It was windy. The greens were firm. They were fast. Some of the pin locations were borderline evil but I putted great."
