Arkema profit up after cost cuts
The French parent of Arkema's north Mobile County chemical plant said Wednesday that its first-quarter net income surged 64 percent to 72 million euros, or about $111.5 million, attributing the improvement to "ongoing transformation of the company and a significant reduction in fixed costs." Part of that cost-cutting is affecting the local facility, which makes plastics additives. Last month, Arkema announced plans to cease production of a particular additive, meaning the loss of 25 jobs this fall from a staff of about 150. Production of the additive will shift from Axis to the Netherlands, the company said, resulting in an annual cost savings of about $5 million.Employees at the Axis plant, which had about 250 employees at its peak in 1998, earn about $55,000 to $60,000 per year, according to the company.
