Take mom to an art show of grand masters in Las Vegas
Looking for something different for Mother's Day this year? Why not treat mom to sights she can only see in New York? You can. Especially if she is an art fan.If names like Chagall, Picasso, Klee and Monet roll off her tongue like melted fine chocolate take her to Las Vegas to catch the last weekend of the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. "What," you might say, "people don't go to Las Vegas to look at fine art."However, the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum has given that a game try since October 2001. While it was never meant to be permanent, the partnership between the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg did bring in about 1.1 million visitors in just under seven years with 10 exhibitions drawn from the permanent collections of each institution. Called the "Jewel Box" and about the size of a high school gym, the Las Vegas museum sits like a giant brown cube adjacent to the Venetian's main entrance lobby. The museum's closing show, "Modern Masters from the Guggenheim Collection," presents 73 masterpieces from the prestigious New York museum. It poses modern artists' interpretations of daily life, portraiture, landscape and still life with works on the same themes by artists associated with Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Expressionism and Surrealism.Hence, Robert Delaunay's "Eiffel Tower with Trees" contrasted with an earlier landscape work, "Mountains at Saint-Remy," by Vincent van Gogh.Or Paul Cézanne's "Still Life: Plate of Peaches" paired with Piet Mondrian's later still life, "Still Life with Gingerpot II, 1912." Other artists in the exhibit that highlights key moments in the development of modern painting from the 1870s through the first several decades of the 20th century include Max Beckmann, Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Albert Gleizes, Archille Gorky, Juan Gris, Alexej Jawlensky, Vasily Kandinsky, Fernand Léger, Kazimir Malevich, Edouard Manet, Franz Marc, André Masson, Joan Miró, Amedeo Modigliani and Emil Nolde. Once you absorb this free exhibition, treat the lady in your life to a gondola ride on the Venetian's Grand Canal. Is there anything more romantic? If you go:What: Guggenheim Hermitage MuseumWhere: 3355 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las VegasDirections: Wend your way to Las Vegas on Interstate 15. Take the exit 39, Sands Avenue. Turn right on Las Vegas Boulevard and almost immediately left into the Venetian's multi-story parking garage. Parking is free. The museum is on the main lobby level.Admission: Free.
