S&P upgrades Peru's credit rating to investment-grade BBB-
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Standard and Poor's raised on Monday Peru's foreign currency long-term credit rating to investment-grade BBB- from BB+, citing the significant decline in the Latin American country's fiscal and external vulnerabilities. Peru has low inflation and strengthening macroeconomic fundamentals, S&P said. The upgrade "also reflects Standard & Poor's expectation that these trends will remain in place over the medium term despite an increasingly riskier international environment and the continuation of challenging local politics," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Sebastian Briozzo in a statement. The outlook on the ratings is stable. Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move. Visit MarketWatch.com for more information on this news.

Peru hikes interest rates, reserve requirements
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Peru's central bank raised its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 6% late Thursday in a move to fight inflation. The rate hike is "aimed at preventing that the rises observed in the international prices of food and fuels will translate into higher inflation expectations in a context of a high pace of growth of both public and private expenditure," the bank said in a statement. The bank also lifted minimum reserve requirements for both local and foreign currency to 9.0% from 8.5% and it raised foreign marginal reserve requirements to 49% from 45% previously. Chile, another Andean nation, also raised interest rates Thursday by 50 basis points to 7.25%. Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move.
