6-year-old Aledo girl bounces back from brain surgery
By JAN JARVIS Six-year-old Jessie Hall is headed upstairs, and she’s not going to let her limp left foot stop her."Jessie’s coming up there," she shouts, adding in a whisper, "It’s hard."Her 10-year-old brother, Matt, coaxes her, repeating "Come on Jessie" until she finally reaches him.It helps to have a cheerleader like Matt when you’re learning to walk again. In June, surgeons at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center removed the right half of Jessie’s brain to treat a rare condition called Rasmussen’s encephalitis, which caused severe, uncontrollable seizures. Going in, her parents knew that Jessie would have some paralysis on her left side. Ten weeks after surgery, she is trying to regain use of her left leg and hand with the help of physical therapy and plenty of encouragement."The left side of her world does not exist," said her mother, Kristi Hall. "She forgets she has a left hand."A watch that vibrates every hour helps her remember to move her hand. It is just one of the ways that Jessie is learning to live life in a new way. Back to schoolOn Monday she’ll start first grade at Stuard Elementary in Aledo, a milestone for any child. But for Jessie it’s a truly giant step.Her parents aren’t worried. She’ll be reunited with the classmates and teachers who have been supportive from the start."She’ll be with family," Kristi Hall said.Last year, when the seizures started and when doctors later diagnosed her condition and told her parents she would need a hemispherectomy, the school was there for her. Children donated their allowances to a giving tree, parents pitched in to help and everyone wore pink, Jessie’s favorite color. The pink ribbons that went up around the school have not come down."On her first day back we’ll take them down because she’s back with us under our roof," Principal Robin Seay said. Striving for normalcyWeary of the media attention and a summer spent mostly in hospitals, Jessie just wants to be a regular kid again. "We are so ready to get back to normal, whatever that is," Kristi Hall said.Normal for now means physical, occupational and speech therapy three times a week."She’ll have a limp the rest of her life and will never get a lot of use in her hand, but we’re going to make darn sure she gets as much use as she can," said her father, Cris Hall. Then there’s what Jessie calls "Daddy therapy," when they walk around their Aledo neighborhood or play on the floor.
