PokerStars to host Macau Cup this weekend
The Macau Poker Cup will have a few events spread over three days, starting today with a charity tournament to benefit the Caritas de Macau. The Caritas de Macau is a social organization in Macau. Its goal is to provide services to individuals, families and communities to help create a more humane condition economically, morally and spiritually. The organization, which is part of the Macau Catholic Church, also works to encourage people to be more responsible for their own lives and activities and to enable themselves to build a community based on truth, justice, fraternity, freedom and peace. The charity event starts at 8 p.m. local time and requires a $500 HKD buy-in plus a $1,500 HKD charitable donation to play. The first- and second-place finishers in the event will win the $25,000 HKD buy-in for the Asian ((Pacific Poker)) Tour Macau Main Event coming up in September. Third place through fifth place will receive entry into the $10,000 Red Dragon tournament, sixth place to 10th place will earn a $1,000 Deep Stack tournament entry and 11th through 35th place will earn entry into the $600 APPT Phase 1 tournament. There is also a cash prize pool that will be distributed from sixth place through 20th place. The Macau Poker Cup Deep Stack event is scheduled to start on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. local time. It costs $100 HKD to enter. At 4 p.m. the poker room will host a Phase 1 mega-satellite to the APPT Macau with a $600 buy-in, and then in the evening the Macau Cup Red Dragon event with a $10,000 HKD buy-in is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the Grand Waldo Casino will host the Macau Cup $500 Challenge at 12:30 p.m. plus a Phase 2 mega-satellite to the APPT Macau. PokerStars is expecting players from at least six different countries to participate in the Macau Poker Cup. Among them will be Steve Chung. Chung, from Hong Kong, won a $100,000 HKD prize package to the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas in June at the PokerStars Macau poker room. He placed 667th out of the 6,844 players who turned up for the 2008 WSOP Main Event. Tony "Don18" Dunst will be making his way from the United States to play in the Macau Poker Cup. He recently won a Bellagio Cup event while in Las Vegas to pocket $193,720. Celina Lin, from Australia, will be heading to Macau once again after cashing in 24th place out of 352 players in the APPT Macau last November. Roger Spetz, from Malaysia, may prove to be the biggest threat in the Macau events this weekend. He finished sixth at the APPT Manila event out of 255 players and seventh out of 186 players at the APPT Seoul. PokerStars welcomes Brazilian to team
Gomes became the first Brazilian to win a World Series of Poker gold bracelet this year when he won the $2,000 No-Limit Hold'em event. The event had more than 2,300 players from around the world, including Kirill Gerasimov from Russia who also made the final table. With the win, Gomes picked up his first major event cash and pocketed $770,540. "Alexandre is a fantastic addition to the world champions of Team PokerStars Pro. Through a mix of card playing skills and competitive spirit, he has exploded on the poker circuit and we believe he will continue to be a player to watch." said Andre Akkari, Team PokerStars Pro. Gomes, 25, was born in Curitiba, Brazil, and was a partner in a corporate law office in his home city until he discovered online poker. Previously he'd just been a social player, playing poker as a hobby with his friends, and then he discovered tournament play on PokerStars. Eventually he was doing well enough with online poker to be able to quit his job as a lawyer and become a full-time professional player. According to PokerStars, Gomes was making regular cash finishes in some of the biggest PokerStars tournaments by early 2007. In February 2008, he made one of his biggest wins on the poker site when he cashed in the Wednesday Hundred Fifty Grand for $65,333. Gomes also started taking on live tournaments in Brazil with some success and had taken on previous WSOP events before finding success this year. "I've always dreamed about playing on Team PokerStars Pro and winning a golden bracelet," Gomes said. "Now, I have realized both dreams at the same time. I don't want to wake up!" Gomes, who plays at PokerStars as Allingomes, joins a stable of pros at the poker sit ethat includes Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer, Joe Hachem, Barry Greenstein, Isabelle Mercier, Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Rousso, Bertrand Grospellier, Humberto Brenes and more. No deals for PokerStars Sunday events
More than 8,000 player turned out for the Sunday Million this week, with 1,233 players earning money from the event. The top two players earned a six-figure cash. SAM66 topped them all to take home $209,571.60. It came down to the Swiss player versus Shantaram, from France, in heads-up play. On the final hand Shantaram went all-in with #Ts#9c against SAM66's #Ad#6h. Facing a 7-to-1 chip deficit, Shantaram needed to win this race, but when the board came #5h#3d#s#6d#Jh, he was out and pocketing more than $140,000 for second place. Being one of the chip leaders for the last few days of the WSOP, it was to nobody's surprise to see him finish at the top of the final table. Although he plans to go back to work, I have a feeling he will be changing his mind, after all with a $900,000 check in his pocket, and a chance at making millions more in four months, there's a good chance he will take the time to hone his skill to the best of his ability. Dennis Phillips talks all about the final table and his feelings on how it will play out in his interview with us, found here. Ivan Demidov - $24,400,000 At the age of 27, this WSOP Main Event marks the first live tournament Demidov has ever played. Sitting in second place in chips, and having already made a minimum of $900,000, a good start to his live tournament career. Coming from Moscow, if Ivan Demidov is able to take the bracelet he will be the first ever Russian to win the WSOP Main Event. Peter Eastgate - 18,375,000 In our interview with the 22-year old Peter Eastgate, the European tells us how he chipped up from 10 million to his current 18 million in chips during the 10 player bubble. "There was one big pot where I raised under the gun with aces and got three callers. The flop came down 3-5-5 and I led out. I got one caller and the turn was a six. We both checked it and I bet really big when a jack hit the river. I got an insta-call and my aces were good." Eastgate's an established online player, known as being young and unpredictable. His reputation may be part of the reason he's so calm and confident about the final table in November. Ylon Schwarz - 12,525,000 With a total of 11 cashes in WSOP events since 2005, the 38 year old New York gambler has plenty of experience to put to use. Having stayed very much under the radar throughout the event, Schwarz was able to play small ball, consistently picking up smaller pots to keep himself in the money. In his run for the final table, Schwarz took his seat on his first TV table; the experience freaked him out a little bit. "I went a little nuts. I just snapped there for a second. So I have to regroup. I'm glad the dinner break is here." If you want to find out exactly what he's talking about, you can read the whole story in our interview here. Darus "Dennis_TO" Suharto - 12,520,000 A 39 year old Canadian accountant, Darus Suharto is relatively unknown in the poker world. He first heard of the WSOP in 2005, won himself a seat in the 2006 Main Event in a PokerStars satellite. He cashed in that event and has been hooked ever since. His biggest hand during the bubble was against Joe Bishop. To read all about it, check out our interview with Dennis_TO. David "Chino" Rheem - 10,230,000 At 28 years old, David Rheem is the best known player on the table. He has had multiple WSOP final table appearances, and having sat at the feature table with the likes of Matusow and Hellmuth during this Main Event, the other players will have plenty of opportunity to watch his play before they take their seats. In perhaps the most humorous response to a question about his opponents studying his play, Rheem told us: "Well, if the other eight people at the table are reading this I'm just going to get piss drunk every night from now until the final table. I'm not going to plan or think at all. I'm just going to raise every pot without looking." Click here to read the whole interview of the 10 Million chipped threat.Visit PokerListings.com
