Kerry commends Bush for considering limited talks with Iran
By JO-ANN MORIARTY jo-ann.moriarty@newhouse.com WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. John F. Kerry, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today signed a letter to the White House commending the Bush Administration for considering to engage in limited talks with Iran. The letter to President Bush from Kerry and six other senators including Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont and Joseph R. Biden of Delaware commends his administration for "actively reviewing the possibility of opening an interests section in Iran, and we write to express our support of this limited but strategically significant U.S. diplomatic presence." They stated their support of the president's decision to send Under Secretary of State William Burns to Geneva to join in talks with Iran over its nuclear programs. "This will send a positive message to the Iranian people and the international community about our intentions and enhance our ability to apply greater pressure on the Iranian government," they said. In a statement Kerry issued later, the Massachusetts Democrat said, "The administration's decision to reverse course and join direct talks with Tehran is the right one, however late."
