Paulson says housing bill will help U.S. 'turn the corner'
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said that a compromise deal on the housing package that now includes explicit government support for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac [s:FRE] would help end the housing correction. "It is a very strong message we are sending to investors around the world and the U.S. that we understand the importance of these organizations to our capital markets and our housing market and these are also the keys to helping us turn the corner here in the housing correction ultimately," Paulson told reporters. He said it was "easy" for him to recommend that President Bush sign the legislation. Paulson said the Federal Reserve will keep its "consultative role" along with a new regulator to help set capital standards for Fannie and Freddie. Paulson refused to estimate how much the backstop of the two mortgage giants would cost the government. He said he was not happy with all of the elements of the compromise.Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move.
