Teacher aims to promote Holocaust studies
By DIANE SMITH FORT WORTH — Linda Negron wasn’t always a teacher.Negron was a nurse — working the night shift — when she began reading about the Holocaust. About 6 million Jews were killed by the Nazis during the state-sponsored persecution known as the Holocaust, according to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s online encyclopedia. When Negron became a teacher, she incorporated the subject into lessons so her middle schoolers could understand the history."I’m very passionate about this topic," said Negron, a former seventh- and eighth-grade English and religion teacher at St. Andrew Catholic School. "I feel I have a responsibility to pass it on to the next generation." Negron is working on a secondary master’s degree in Holocaust and Jewish studies. Negron was one of 14 teacher fellows selected by the Holocaust museum in Washington, D.C. The five-day institute began July 13 and ended Saturday. Fellows have at least five years of Holocaust education experience and have an extensive knowledge of Holocaust history, literature and teaching, according to the museum.Negron spent eight to 10 hours immersed in discussions with survivors and experts holding doctorates. Her goal is to generate new ways to help teachers use museum resources to teach the Holocaust. She plans to take a sabbatical to study how Fort Worth-area secondary private and public schools teach the Holocaust and compare it to what schools across the state are teaching about the subject. She said she wants to be a resource to area teachers. Why should the Holocaust be taught in classrooms?Negron said that from a social injustice perspective the Holocaust shows young students how extreme hatred and intolerance can push societies to destroy others. She said the subject can be used in writing to allow students to make connections to modern injustices."We’ve seen Kosovo, Rwanda, and today we see Darfur," she said. Do teachers shy away from the subject?"I think the topic can be overwhelming," she said. "A lot of teachers believe they have to be disciplined in history."Negron said the subject lends itself to literature because there are so many writings available. How do students react to the subject?"I’ve learned that middle schoolers are not too young to learn this information," she said. "They want to become proactive."Her students raised $5,000 pennies to give to a relief agency that is helping in Darfur.Where can teachers find out more?Negron said there are many resources available. The national Holocaust museum offers teaching materials and resources online at www.ushmm.org/museum. The Dallas Holocaust Museum — The Center for Education and Tolerance also offers resources, including teacher orientations. The Web site is www.dallasholocaustmuseum.org. The Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority in Israel is another valuable source: www.yadvashem.org.
