Safeway board hikes dividend, buyback plan
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Safeway Inc. said Wednesday that its board approved a 20% hike to the company's quarterly dividend, raising the payout to 8.28 cents a share compared with the previous 6.9 cents. The new dividend is payable July 17 to stockholders of record at the June 26 close. The Pleasanton, Calif., food and drug retailer also said its board upped the authorized stock-repurchase plan by $1 billion to a total of $5 billion. It said it has bought back about $3.55 billion of stock since the plan's inception through the end of the first quarter.
