High Street High School alum to reunite
A lot of stories will be told and memories will be shared this weekend when alumni of the old High Street High School gather for their biennial reunion. The reunion is open to all graduates of the school, which served Bowling Green’s black population in the era of segregation.“It’s just good to see a lot of old friends come in,” said James Sears, a 1959 High Street graduate and Scottsville resident who is a member of the reunion steering committee. “We’ll sit around and have a good time.”While in high school, Sears played basketball, football, baseball, track and golf and was a member of a graduating class of 41 students.High Street High School opened in 1954 for the city’s black students, replacing a similar school on State Street.Desegregation occurred in 1966, when the High Street students came to Bowling Green High School. The High Street building was used by Bowling Green Independent Schools as an elementary school until it closed in 1974.Sears, who is retired from Holley Carburetor, said the reunion begins with a golf outing at Crosswinds Golf Course at Wilkinson Trace at 8 a.m. Friday, followed by dinner at Garvin House at Fort Webb.On Saturday, a continental breakfast will be served at 9 a.m. at the Garvin House, and an alumni banquet is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus building.Herbert Oldham, a former social studies and science teacher and assistant football coach who later served as principal of High Street Elementary School and director of pupil personnel for the city school district, will be the banquet’s keynote speaker.Oldham of Bowling Green graduated from State Street High School in 1951, and spent his career in the education field. He helped organize the first reunion of High Street students in 1983, and the reunion now occurs every two years.“I have a lot of memories from (High Street),” Oldham said. “The most unique thing about being involved with the school was the closeness that the teachers and students had. The teachers had authority and respect from the students, and they stood in place of their parents during the day.”A dance will be from 9 p.m. until midnight Saturday at the Knights of Columbus building, and the alumni will gather Sunday for worship services at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Many of the surviving graduates of the High Street school live in either Bowling Green or surrounding communities, but the reunion attracts alumni from all over the nation.Oldham said he often encounters former students in the community.“I see a lot of students who still live here,” Oldham said. “It’s a good feeling when they remember you and you remember them, and you can be proud of the way they have advanced in their lives.”
