Handelsbanken profit falls 27%
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Sweden's Handelsbanken said Tuesday that its first-half net profit fell 27.4% to 4.77 billion kronor ($802.6 million), partly due to its 767 million kronor capital loss in the first quarter on the sale of certain U.S. asset-backed securities. The group said net interest income rose 17% to 8.89 billion kronor, while net fee and commission income fell 10% to 3.45 billion kronor mainly due to a fall in equity-related commission. Loan losses in the period were 678 million kronor, compared to net recovering of 135 million kronor a year earlier.
