24-Hour Room Service: Tschuggen Grand Hotel, Arosa, Switzerland
Alpine ski resorts that lack the year-round pull of an Eiger or Matterhorn often become ghost towns when the snow thaws, their hotels shuttered and all the ski instructors off to teach at surfing schools. But the threat posed by climate change to the future of low-lying resorts is forcing them to broaden their appeal and think of ways to attract visitors year-round.

Swiss worry UBS probe a black mark on country
Switzerland's Finance Minister yesterday defended Swiss banking giant UBS AG as lawmakers voiced concerns a U.S. tax evasion probe of the bank could sully the country's reputation. The ''presumption of innocence'' should be applied to the bank, said Finance Minister Hans-Rudolf Merz. U.S. authorities have taken steps to oblige UBS to divulge the details of bank accounts held by U.S. citizens in the investigations. As complying would mean flouting Swiss privacy and banking secrecy laws, Swiss authorities are also involved in the issue. Yesterday, a parliamentary commission said it was ''worried about the eventual negative consequences of this case for the Swiss financial centre.'' UBSN (Zurich) rose 32 francs to 20.62 francs ($20.61).
