UBS aims to appease clients with buyback
UBS AG, Switzerland's largest bank, plans to buy back as much as $3.5-billion (U.S.) of auction-rate preferred shares after being sued in the U.S. for fraudulently selling the securities as low-risk alternatives to cash. Clients holding the securities in UBS accounts will be able to get their money back in full, the Zurich-based company said yesterday. The offer, the first by a broker, applies to shares issued by tax-exempt closed-end funds. UBS was sued last month by Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin, who said investors were misled by advisers into believing the securities were as safe as cash while paying higher dividends. Mr. Galvin called the announcement ''inadequate'' and said he would continue his case. UBSN (Zurich) rose 63 centimes to $18.93 Swiss francs ($18.63 Canadian).
