No confirmation of Canadian deaths
OTTAWA -- Canadian diplomats have yet to confirm reports twoCanadians died in a suspected U.S. missile strike against a militanthideout in Pakistan amid increasingly aggressive U.S. militaryoperations in the tribal lands bordering Afghanistan. Canadian HighCommission officials in Islamabad had reported no information on themen Wednesday night, said Rodney Moore, a Foreign Affairs spokesman.The two men were among several people believed killed Saturday aftera missile struck a house in the South Waziristan region of northwestPakistan's ethnic Pashtun tribal areas known to be thick withal-Qaida and Taliban militants, the Pakistani newspaper Dawnreported. It said local people saw a plane, possibly a U.S. unmanneddrone, fly over before the missile struck a house just outside Wana,the main town in the region. U.S. drones have attacked Pakistaniborder regions several times this year, killing dozens of militants.
