Getting psyched for the start of school
Bowling Green schools, community organizations, free food and a fashion show were the makings of Purple Pride Readifest. The annual event Tuesday was Bowling Green City School’s kickoff to a new school year, slated to begin Aug. 5, and provided parents and children with information. The event was held at Parker-Bennett-Curry Elementary School. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the elementary school’s gym buzzed with parents and students of all grade levels as they moved from table to table.“This is a good idea. It’s kind of exciting,” said Bowling Green Junior High seventh-grader Bailey Jordan, 11, who was part of the fashion show sponsored by Target. “I haven’t been to Readifest in a long time ... it kind of gets me in the mind frame of school starting.”Bailey isn’t the only one ready for school to start. Fourth-grader Mateo Owmby, 8, said he is, too.“I’m ready to go back,” he said.Several community organizations were also in attendance, including LifeSkills, Bowling Green Technical College, Boys & Girls Club, Girls Inc., Girl Scouts, Community Action, the City of Bowling Green Enterprise Community and the Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs.“We are about the best kept secret in Kentucky,” said Lucena Davis, care coordinator for the Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs. “(Being here) is our way of getting our agency’s name out there. Usually after this, we get phone calls.”Amber Boards, component coordinator for Western Kentucky University child care centers, said being at Readifest lets the community know services are available for all children.“We saw this as an opportunity to reach out in the community and serve more children,” she said. “It’s important because the basis of our program is to serve children and families.”This year’s event marked 14 years the school district has been preparing both parents and students for the start of school. The 2007 event had about 400 students and families in attendance, said Leslie Peek, the district’s public relations coordinator.“Readifest helps parents have the information they need to be prepared for school,” she said.In addition to gathering information, the Barren River District Health Department provided immunizations at no cost. After roaming around in the gym, parents and students made their way into the lunchroom for popcorn and drinks, some taking a seat to enjoy their snack.“This is going great. We’ve had a steady stream of parents and students,” said Mike Wix, principal at Dishman-McGinnis Elementary School. “This gives kids an opportunity to feel like school’s about to start. It gives them a familiar face to look for when they get to school.“It starts school on a positive note.”Parent Jolie Owmby, Mateo’s mother, said she is pleased the school district offers the event.“Everything is in one place,” she said. “I don’t have to go from office to office to get the information I need or make phone calls and be put on hold to find I need an appointment. More power set for Alvaton
An increasing demand for power has Warren Rural Electric Cooperative Corp. looking to build a new substation in Alvaton. The need for a fourth substation in the area south and east of Bowling Green is being spurred by increased demand. At current growth levels, the three current substations in the area would run out of capacity in about 18 months, said Steven Gwin, Warren RECC manager of engineering.A meeting for landowners who might see TVA power lines coming across their properties to the substation is slated for 3 p.m. July 31 at the Phil Moore Park gymnasium at 7101 Scottsville Road.Currently, the area is served by the Greenwood, Hardcastle and Plano substations with 20 megawatts of capacity each.Click here to see a map of the current distribution system and click here to see a map of the proposed system. Each substation is seeing annual growth in demand of between 5.37 percent and 9.26 percent.“Greenwood, with all the growth we’ve seen, is approaching capacity,” Gwin said of the substation just south of Bowling Green. The new substation, with 25 megawatts of capacity and designed for future expansion, would serve a large region surrounding the rapidly growing Alvaton area and would encompass some areas currently served by the other substations. The Alvaton substation will cost approximately $2.5 million and would be housed on a 11/2 acre lot off U.S. 231 north of Ivy Farm Street, which Warren RECC already owns.Adding a substation is cheaper than adding capacity to current substations.“It’s three times more expensive to renovate than to build a new substation,” Gwin said.Shorter lines will also offer more reliability of service as damage from storms or malfunctions would affect smaller areas.“It eliminates another step in the transmission path,” Gwin said. The single-pole, 161-kilovolt power lines would cross about four miles from the existing TVA Bowling Green-Scottsville lines west to the substation. They will require 100-foot rights of way. Letters to more than 100 potentially impacted landowners went out last Thursday. The TVA is seeking to acquire right of way easements for the lines. Property owners are compensated for the easements. After gathering input, TVA will pick a route from options that include 15 separate segments. The route will also need federal approval.“We’ll pick what’s best for everybody as a whole,” said Ernie Peterson, TVA’s general manager of Kentucky Customer Service, who is based in its Bowling Green office.TVA’s land purchases and clearance practices for new power lines locally have previously brought lawsuits claiming that the lines lowered property values. In picking the Alvaton site, Gwin said Warren RECC followed its goal to “look for sites that minimize the impact on the community.”Peterson also said TVA will aim to minimize the impact on property owners.“When we look at a project like this, we look at the need ... we feel there is a need for this project,” Peterson said. “Growth has been very strong and it’s only getting stronger.”While the route of the transmission lines is somewhat flexible, the location of the substation is less so.“The location for a substation is very critical. It’s very important to integrate it as close to the load center as possible,” Gwin said.TVA will accept public comment on the project until Sept. 2 with a target date for completion of the substation and lines of fall 2009.— Maps and more information about the project are available at the TVA Web site at www.tva.gov/power/projects. Comments may be submitted to Steve Pitt, TVA, 1101 Market St., Chattanooga, TN 37402; by calling 800-355-6372; or by e-mailing newtransline@tva.com.— For more information about TVA rights of way, see www.tva.gov/power/rightofway/faq.htm.

ConocoPhillips sticks by 2008 production target
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- ConocoPhillips CEO Jim Mulva on Wednesday told Wall Street analysts he's standing by the oil major's target for average production of 1.8 million barrels of oil equivalent a day for 2008, excluding volume from its Lukoil investment. The company plans to buy back $10 billion of its own stock by the end of the year, and invest about $15 billion in capital projects. Mulva echoed other industry players in supporting offshore drilling in the U.S. and said a windfall profits tax on oil companies would discourage investment in energy production. ConocoPhillips continues to move forward on its Denali pipeline project with BP . He declined to comment on whether Exxon Mobil would opt to join the project as an investor or a customer. "Ultimately, we'd like to see everyone participate," he said of the pipeline to bring natural gas from Alaska to U.S. markets. Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move. Visit MarketWatch.com for more information on this news.
