ConocoPhillips sticks by 2008 production target
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- ConocoPhillips CEO Jim Mulva on Wednesday told Wall Street analysts he's standing by the oil major's target for average production of 1.8 million barrels of oil equivalent a day for 2008, excluding volume from its Lukoil investment. The company plans to buy back $10 billion of its own stock by the end of the year, and invest about $15 billion in capital projects. Mulva echoed other industry players in supporting offshore drilling in the U.S. and said a windfall profits tax on oil companies would discourage investment in energy production. ConocoPhillips continues to move forward on its Denali pipeline project with BP . He declined to comment on whether Exxon Mobil would opt to join the project as an investor or a customer. "Ultimately, we'd like to see everyone participate," he said of the pipeline to bring natural gas from Alaska to U.S. markets. U.S. Senate delays bill including storm aid for coast
WASHINGTON -- In a blow to activists seeking storm-related housing aid for Mobile County, the Senate Appropriations Committee will wait until September to take up a supplemental spending bill, the panel's chairman, Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., said in a statement. The committee had been scheduled to debate the bill Thursday, Byrd said, but he decided to postpone consideration because of "uncertainty" over how oil and gas drilling issues are playing out in the full Senate. The Democratic leadership is "committed" to taking up the spending measure after lawmakers return from their August break, he said.A Byrd spokesman declined further comment this morning, but in a Tuesday letter, Republican committee members, including U.S. Sens. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., and Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, suggested that they were prepared to use the Thursday hearing to challenge restrictions on off-shore oil and gas drilling off the United States' coasts as well as oil shale production in the Rocky Mountain west.Housing advocates had hoped the bill would target up to $110 million to help south Alabama residents rebuild and repair homes whacked by Hurricane Katrina almost three years ago.
