Thais ready for violence in dispute over temple
KHAO PRA VIHARN, Thailand -- Thais living along the borderwith Cambodia began evacuation and weapon drills on Wednesday,fearing a border dispute might escalate into violence after talksfailed this week. In villages near the disputed Preah Vihear temple,where hundreds of Thai and Cambodian troops faced off for a ninthday on Wednesday, workers dug holes for new bomb shelters. At theheart of the dispute is a 4.6 sq.-km area around the temple, whichsits on an escarpment that forms a natural boundary and is claimedby both nations. It was awarded to Cambodia by an internationalarbitrator decades ago, but the decision is not recognized by Thainationalists, some of whom sparked the crisis by entering the templelast week.
