Hurricane Dolly Makes Landfall
All eyes are on south Texas and Hurricane Dolly, as it makes landfall this afternoon. While Dolly might not sound like a powerful name, people along the gulf coast in Texas are feeling her wrath. Hurricane force winds over 85 miles an hour are rattling people and property, but it's the heavy rain that may cause the biggest heartache. More than a foot could fall in some areas, and if Dolly slows down over land, it could be even worse. The big worry is that levees in the low lying Rio Grande Valley will break, triggering massive flooding in crowded neighborhoods. The water was already rising early this morning. Mandatory evacuations have not been ordered, but people in flood prone areas were asked to move out. Power has already been knocked out for thousands. At least 14 counties have been declared disaster areas so emergency workers and equipment could be placed in the storm's path. And if a hurricane isn't enough to deal with, several counties are also under a tornado watch

Destructive Franklin County microburst may have contained a small tornado
The National Weather Service will make its determination after examining photographs of the damage.By GEORGE GRAHAM ggraham@repub.com WHATLEY - The National Weather Service is investigating whether a small tornado caused some of the severe wind damage here and in Sunderland Saturday evening. "It is possible it could have been a very small and week tornado embedded in a bigger and much more powerful microburst," Robert M. Thompson, meteorologist in charge of the Taunton-based forecast center. Meanwhile, the next 36 hours could bring some 2 to 4 inches of rain to Western Massachusetts with even higher amounts potentially in localized areas, Thompson said. The National Weather Service is considering the implementation of a flood watch, Thompson said. "We haven't made a call on that yet," he said. The National Weather Service is waiting to examine photographs of the Franklin County storm damage before making its determination as to whether a tornado touched down there, Thompson said. Thompson stressed, however, that even if it was a tornado the microburst inflicted the most significant damage by far. Microbursts are essentially a downburst of violent winds that can reach 100 mph or more. The Franklin county microburst was "one of the stronger ones we have seen this summer," Thompson said. Late last month, thunderstorm-spawned microbursts inflicted heavy tree damage in Palmer and East Longmeadow. Thompson said this summer is experiencing above-average activity for thunderstorms. They have been part of a large-scale pattern fueled by high heat and humidity and strong winds aloft, he said. "That sets the stage for potential thunderstorms," Thompson said. Southern New England typically experiences a few weak tornadoes each season, Thompson said.
