Leeds council approves new roof for police headquarters
Repair seen as temporary fix The Leeds City Council tonight approved spending nearly $50,000 to replace a leaky roof on police headquarters near the civic center. The new roof is seen as a temporary measure until the city can afford a more permanent structure, such as a municipal complex that was discussed last summer. Police headquarters has been plagued with mold that led to operations being conducted in trailers. Its 911 system and dispatchers, however, have remained in a corner of the building. Mayor James "Tac" Whitfield, along with council members Ross Bartee, Carol Phillips and Cary Kennedy, approved spending $49,980 for Birmingham Roofing & Sheet Metal to do the work. Council members Kenneth Washington and Bryce Thornton opposed the measure, saying the council should consider something more permanent than fixing a building that prompted employees to leave for health reasons. Phillips said employees have to be moved out of the trailers before a tornado blows them away.
