Mercedes-Benz trimming production
Mercedes-Benz began notifying the 4,000 employees at its Vance factory today that it is scaling back production of its Alabama-made vehicles. Mercedes-Benz is scaling back production of its Alabama-made vehicles, and the German automaker began notifying the 4,000 employees at its Vance factory today. The move was prompted by sales trends and the overall economy, plant spokeswoman Felyicia Jerald said. To achieve the production cut, the plant will cancel the night shift on six selected days later this year and also lengthen the typical Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday shutdowns. Mercedes would not specify how many vehicles it expected to build in Vance this year or how many fewer it will build under the rollback plan. Last year, the plant built more than 174,000 M-Class sport utilities, GL-Class full-sized sport utilities and R-Class crossovers. The automaker also would not specify how long the holiday shutdowns would be extended. The plant is typically shut down on Thursday and Friday during Thanksgiving week and for a week at Christmas. Employees will have the option of taking vacation time when production is suspended, Jerald said. If they no longer have vacation days or if they need to work, they will have other options, she said, but did not elaborate. Automakers across the spectrum, particularly those who build sport utilities and other light trucks, have been hit hard by soaring gas prices and a sluggish economy. Consumers are increasingly turning to smaller, more fuel efficient cars instead of light trucks, and automakers are adjusting their production to match demand. Earlier this week, Honda's Alabama plant said it would scale back production of its Pilot sport utilities and Odyssey minivans by 10,000 vehicles this year. Earlier this month, Toyota's Huntsville engine plant said it plans to suspend production of V-8 engines from August to November in response to the automaker's plan to rollback production of certain pickups and sport utilities.
