Airline shares climb on oil prices, UAL, JetBlue results
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Lower oil prices and solid second-quarter results from United Airlines parent UAL Corp. and its low-cost rival JetBlue helped to lift the airline sector early Tuesday. The Amex Airlines Index rose 1.5% to 17.31 points with 11 of its 14 components in the green. Crude oil for August delivery, which expires Tuesday, fell $1.50 to $129.54 a barrel in electronic trading on Globex. UAL and JetBlue posted better-than-feared results, helping to lift their share prices by 6% and 5% each. US Airways reported a wider-than-expected loss, but was able to raise its cash position slightly. UAL swings to second-quarter loss
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- UAL Corp. said Tuesday that it swung to a second-quarter loss of $2.73 billion, or $21.47 a share, from a profit of $274 million, or $1.83 a share, in the year-earlier period. The Chicago carrier recorded $2.6 billion of previously announced accounting charges in the latest period. Excluding certain charges, the airline lost $1.19 a share. A FactSet Research survey of analysts, on average, projected a loss of $1.85 a share for the quarter. Operating revenue rose to $5.37 billion from $5.21 billion. Airline shares get bruised after oil prices climb higher
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Airline stocks took a beating early Monday after the price of oil jumped to its highest point in a nearly a week. The Amex Airline Index fell 1.6% to 17.52 points with 12 of its 14 components in the red. Crude for August delivery surged $2.42 to $131.31 a barrel in electronic trading on Globex. The contract expires on Tuesday. Leading the spiral downwards were shares of UAL Corp. , the parent company for United Airlines, down 5% to $5.19.
